[59922] Gorhanm's Obituary/Online Eulogy: "On March 25, 2023, the Reverend Gorham Kimball Gould passed from this life peacefully after several days of resting in the presence of his family, as they sang him the gospel hymns he loved. Known as Gordie to his many friends and Papa to his adoring family, he was 95 - and, as far as we can tell, loved by everyone he ever met. Gorham was born on October 24th, 1927, in the tiny Washington County town of Princeton, Maine, at the nexus of the Roll Dam lumber mill and the Indian Township Passamaquoddy reservation. The fifth of ten children ('I've been in the middle all my life!') of Chester Gould and Mona Bailey, he grew up guiding, fishing, and making mischief. A curious but irreverent child, he had little patience for most of formal education ('at school I went in the front door and then out the side window'), but loved to read and write, and would quote his school books and practice his penmanship for the rest of his life. Gorham idolized his elder brothers Lee and Earl, outdoorsmen who had become decorated heroes of the Second World War. After their father died following an injury at the mill to which he was a witness, Gorham lied about his age to enlist in the Navy. But during training, his whole platoon contracted rheumatic fever, and Gorham spent two excruciating years in a military hospital undergoing experimental treatments and relearning how to walk. He was discharged from the hospital and the military at 20 and advised by the doctors he would likely not see 30 ('shows you someone else is in charge of that department.') His spine fused with arthritis and fragile as glass, he would be in chronic pain and walk with crutches for most of his life. After years of coping with alcohol, he decided to quit drinking and commit himself to Christ. He never again touched anything stiffer than Moxie as long as he lived. Gorham became, as he liked to call it, a 'Bible-believing Christian;' to paraphrase Groucho Marx, he would not join any denomination that would have him as a member. Only the Book could claim him, and most especially the Gospel. He believed - completely and sincerely - every word of the New Testament: Jesus had come, loved the poorest and meekest most of all, died for our sins, and would come again to save all those who suffered. He would spread this Good News to everyone he met for the rest of his life: on the bus to strangers, over meals to family, to any nurse bringing him his meds. 'I dont mean to preach,' was the most common way for Gorham to begin a sentence, with 'but as the Bible says,' immediately following it, and suddenly an hour had passed. An incorrigibly independent man, whom absolutely no one could tell what to do or how to think, Gorham was happiest contemplating the mysteries of Scripture and figuring out how to resolve its complexities into a consistent story of salvation. Whether copying the Bible over by longhand (which he did twice), or completing by correspondence a graduate degree in theology (with a thesis articulating conceptual foundations for Oneness Pentecostalism and other nontrinitarian approaches), he was a textualist by method, but his interpretations were always oriented around Jesus love as his hermeneutic North Star. He published four books of poetry inspired by the Gospel and left countless scraps of paper with quatrains behind him scattered like autumn leaves. Gorham could never see so much as a sunset without penning four lines of verse thanking his Creator for it. A child of profound poverty and the Civilian Conservation Corps, who was himself long discriminated against due to his disability before the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act, Gorham fused his theological convictions with the political principles of the New Deal to form a coherent worldview built around a kind of applied Beatitudes ('if Jesus were alive today, they would call him a socialist and crucify him again'). No matter how little money he made, he always paid the tithe, reasoning it belonged to God, not him. He believed all of us had a basic duty to comfort and care for the poor, and the sick, and the downtrodden. After many years struggling to find work on account of his disability, he spent sixteen happy years as a night watchman at First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, in part because only the Christian Scientists - with their particular view on illness - would hire a man like him, and in part because he loved to debate the works of Mary Baker Eddy with them (and they loved to have him officiate their weddings and memorials). When he was physically unable to continue working, the Church not only gave him a generous pension early, but its leadership petitioned the VA on his behalf to retroactively grant him full service-connected disability, which benefits he had been unsuccessfully seeking for years. These benefits allowed Gorham to receive adequate and appropriate care for the rest of his life, and he (and his family) are forever grateful to the Church of Christ, Scientist for how they treated their found friend 'Gordie' with dignity and care. Gorham's first great love of the Bible would lead him to his other great love: Marjorie. A fellow energetic evangelical from Washington County, who had already founded her own parish before the age of 25, these two independent-minded 'Maine-iacs' were married on January 26th, 1957 ('it was a blizzard that day, and it's been a blizzard ever since!'). They would have three children: Joy, Stephen, and David, moving from Maine, to South Boston, and finally to Everett, where they would live in a small house down the Lynde on Bow Street, near Mike's Donuts, across from what used to be Everett Station, for almost 50 years. Through their 66 lively and lovely years of marriage, Gorham and Marjorie raised their kids, worked around the clock (literally: he worked nights, and she worked at Schrafft's and then in insurance; they barely crossed paths on weekdays in those years), pastored countless congregations around Boston, and held fast to their vows and true to their love. Their many years at the Florida Holiness Campgrounds in Lakeland, Florida, were filled with Bible study and meals with friends. To the very end, Gorham could not bear to be long apart from Marjorie ("the best little wife I ever had"), which dynamic helped clarify that hospice (rather than a protracted hospital stay) was the best choice to ease his transition. Gorham was a tender, caring father-in-law to Joy's husband Dan and Stephen's wife Marie, and completely besotted with his six grandsons: Christopher, Alex, Eric, Thomas, Joshua, and Matthew. He loved any time he got to spend with 'Papa's Men,' who quickly surpassed his 5'4" frame ("in Maine, we measure a man from the chin up!"), but could somehow never outdo his big hugs and enormous heart. He also doted on their partners, including Eric's wife Justine and Christopher's girlfriend Stephanie, and his grandkids-by-proxy, particularly the Peterson cousins (from Dan's side) for whom 'Nana and Papa' were holiday fixtures and surrogate grandparents. He had superlatives for all of them, and would brag about them as if they were his own. He gave his affection openly and unabashedly: 'Papa loves,' was his favorite way to end any phone call or conversation, the latter after a rough-whiskered kiss on the cheek. In his last years, at an assisted living facility in Nashua, he would stir as visitors tried to tiptoe out, long past his bedtime, softly murmuring: 'not going so soon, are you?' He loved nature, animals, and babies; when his vision failed, at the end, he would sometimes 'see' children playing at his feet, and huskily ask his company 'well well well, whose darling baby is that?" He laughed and cried and loved freely, and greeted friends and strangers alike with a great bear hug ('I have a PhD: Professor in the Hugging Department.') A renegade reverend to the end, Gorham would often cluck his tongue and ruefully observe that, as he read the Bible, there was nothing more ridiculous than to say someone was 'up in heaven now,' citing chapter and verse of Revelations to argue that all those who died would simply sleep until the Second Coming. We will therefore say he is preceded in his slumber by his parents, eight of his nine siblings, and his youngest son David; his memory is awake in his wife Marjorie, her sister-in-law Sandra White, his youngest brother'Baby Fred', his children Joy and Stephen, their spouses and children, and many more who loved him. It is fitting that he passed on the day Gabriel told Mary she would bear Jesus, Son of God, for the Annunciation was in some sense the preface to the Good News that Gorham sought to share all his life."
