He was a member of Smithville United Methodist Church, a 1951 graduate of Sycamore High School and was a member of the Indian Mill Antique Tractor Association. Mr. Griffin loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards, going out to eat and going camping with his family and friends."
Maria Elizabeth Krafft's baptismal sponsors were Heinrich Beyer and wife. (source - Record of Reverend John Casper Stovever -Baptism and Marriage, 1730-1779, published by Harrisburg Publishing Company, 1896). Ancestry.com offers: "Kraft Name Meaning - German (also Kräft), Danish, Swedish, and Jewish (Ashkenazic): nickname for a strong man, from Old High German kraft, German Kraft strength, power. The Swedish name probably originated as a soldiers name. In part the German and Danish names possibly also derive from a late survival of the same word used as a byname, Old High German Chraft(o), Old Norse Kraptr."
This information is from Forrest D. Shade via Internet, 10/97 (FDShade@aol.com): MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION ON ANDREAS --> The father of Andreas is not identified, though Myron Lewis Shade in his 1931 genealogy names Hans Adam Shade who arrived in America in 1737 or 1738 as the father, but lists no proof. There is other evidence that Hans Adam was not the father of Andreas, as records exist that list three sons of Hans Adam as George b. 1742, Nicholas b. 1745, and Charles b. 1750. Though his name appears mostly as "ANDREW SHADE" in "The Shade Family" genealogy authored by Janet Shade in the 1980's, on entry to America it is written "ANDEREAS SHAAD" or ANDEREAS SHAADT" (it is unclear due to an ink blot), however it appears that someone else signed his name as his mark "X" appears between his first and last name. His last name is sometimes found as "SHAAD" SHAADT" "SHADT" "SCHAAT" and "SCHAADT" but as early as 1759 (see 1759 land papers below) his name was recorded as "ANDREW SHADE". Francis Shade elected to record his name as "ANDREAS SHADE" Likewise, Andreas' wife is recorded variously as "MARIA" or "'MARY" with the last name either "KRAFFT" or "KRAFT". Following is from Janet Shade's "The Shade Family" genealogy (published in the 1980's and now out of print): SHIP LIST # 151-C: Penna. Archives, State Library, Harisburg, Penna. P. 91; List 45.6 AT THE COURT HOUSE AT PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY 21ST OF AUGUST 1750 - PRESENT : Thomas Lawrence, ESQ., Mayor. The forreignors whose names are underwritten imported in the Ship Anderson,Capt. Hugh Campbell from Rotterdam and Cowes in England, did this day take and subscribe ye usual oath to ... this list includes the name Andereas Schaadt (or Shaad, it's unclear). His age at the time of his arrival in 1750 has not been established, but one source has him listed as born in Germany in 1725. Four years after his arrival in America he m. Maria Elizabeth Krafft of Bern Twp., Berks Co., PA. - Record of Reverend John Casper Stoever - Baptismal and Marriage, 1730-1779, printed by the Harrisburg Publishing Company, 1896: p64: Marriages: "February 10, 1754: Andreas Schaat and Maria Elizabeth Krafft of Bern Township." Maria Elizabeth's birth and baptism was also recorded: p37-38: Andreas Krafft (Northkill) Maria Elizabeth, b. April 17, 1737; bapt. July 17, 1737, Sps; Heinrich Beyer and wife. (a margin note in the book: " Christ Little Tulpehocken or Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church near Bernville"). Mary Elizabeth died ca. 1769 and on March 25, 1771 Andreas m. Marie Eva Kettner (Ketner ?) And again from Janet's book: "Andreas Schaadt settled in Tulpehocken Twp., Berks Co., PA. There he lived, reared his family, acquired a farm of 300 acres, died and was buried. Forrest Shade has not been able to locate the gravesites of Andreas and Mary Elizabeth though it is very possible that they are buried in the cemetery of the REED'S LUTHERAN CHURCH AT STOUCHSBERG, which was founded in 1743. Though Andreas might be buried at CHRIST LUTHERAN CHURCH AT STOUCHSBURG which was built in 1786. Helene Kline Mooty, R 2 Box 8 Shady Grove Farm, Grundy Center IA 50638 in handwriten document date 8/6/1983 indicates "Andreas Schat "Revolutionary War Patriot" m. Maria Eva Ketner.
---- ----- --- ---- ----
From "History of Berks Co. Pennsylvania" by Morton L. Montgomery, 1886: On page 1041 of this 1204 page book Heinrich Schade is named among the persons who paid taxes in Berks Co. prior to 1734. (It is unknown if Heinrich is related to Andreas Shade). Pages 1083-1097 of this book are devoted to Tulpehocken Township (Tulpehocken; settled about 1707; incorporated 1729 while part of Lancaster Co.) and there records that "In 1759 Andreas Shade paid 2 pounds in property taxes --" Also, see "History of the Counties of Berks and Lebanon" by l. Daniel Rupp, published by G. Hills, 1844. Both of these books describe the area in the period. Accordingly it is known that when Andreas first arrived in 1750 the area now called Reading PA had no houses but by Feb 1752 it consisted of 130 houses, 41 stables, 160 families consisting of 378 persons. The original population was principally German who emigrated from Wurtemberg and the Palatinate though the administration of public affairs was chiefly in the hands of the "Friends". During this period so many Germans arrived that the English did not like it. It was peaceful until the the French and Indian War from 1754-1763. By that time Andeas had just gotten m. and was setting up house keeping. During those years about 200 peple were killed by the Indians along with the burning of houses, barns and crops in Berks Co. The years of 1755 though 1759 seemed to be the worst. (It is a safe bet that Andreas had to keep his rifle handy at all times.) Another Shade is mentioned in one of these books: "The Rehrersburg Creamery was built in 1885 by Isaac H. Shade & Company" (probably one of the four Isaacs descended from Andreas and born in the mid 1800's). There is another book - "Tulpehocken Immigrants" by the Rev Frederick Weiser.

Our immigrant Ancestor ANDREAS Shade was known as ANDREW as early as 1759, just 4 years after coming to America when he purchased land in Tulpehocken Twp Berks Co. PA:
Following is copied from a photocopy of original land deeds which are on file in the Pennsylvania archives (photocopies are in my possession). Forrest Shade has tried to copy this photocopy exactly but where he could not read it he inserted (?)
LAND OWNED BY ANDREAS SHADE
Janet's genealogy indicates that Andreas had 300 acres. Forrest Shade has photocopies of land records for Andreas which indicate the following purchases:
1 - 64 acres "Shady Grove" 20# 17 S 6P date 1759
2 - 20 1/4 acres @5# PER 100 acres 1767
3 - 70 1/4 acres (7# 8S 6P) "Shadow" 1767
4 - 40 acres @ 10# per 100 acres
this was an agreement to purchase contingent upon
the Commonwealth's purchase from the indians.
(NOTE: The name on all of these documents is "Andrew Shade")

"Eastern Sierra News" posted on the Sierra Wave Media web site 4 June 2012: "Kenney Scruggs, the Bishop attorney and civic activist who became a voice in court for children trapped in their parents custody battles, has died after a struggle with cancer. She was 62.
"Scruggs worked tirelessly on criminal and domestic cases, and often took on unpopular clients and cases without concern for the personal consequences. Her friends and relatives will remember her best for her personal devotion to loved ones who needed her.
'The Eastern Sierra has lost a beautiful soul who gave a bright energy to her friends, family, community and clients,' said Benett Kessler, owner of Sierra Wave Media, who had been a close friend of Scruggs for 37 years. 'Her strength and goodness are irreplaceable.'
"Known for her even-tempered, no nonsense style, Scruggs was part of Inyo County history and her passing is the end of an era because she was an influential figure who, often behind the scenes, tackled controversial issues such as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Powers control over Owens Valleys resources.
"During one particularly contentious public meeting dealing with the LADWP, Kenney confronted a group of cattle ranchers who had sided with the agency. 'I am disappointed,' Scruggs said, looking them straight in the eyes. 'I thought cowboys were the heroes of the West.'
"Inyo County Superior Court Judge Dean Stout recalled Scruggs as a woman 'who was true to her conviction and stood firmly committed to the protection of everyones constitutional rights.'
"'To Kenney, the practice of law was a profession - not a business,' Stout said. 'With keen analytical skills, she was a zealous advocate for her clients, but still treated everyone with dignity and respect.'
"Colleague Attorney Doug Buchanan said, 'I worked with Kenney from the start to the end of her legal career, from law student to one of the mostly highly regarded attorneys in Inyo and Mono counties. Kenney combined finely-honed competence with a pure and untarnished adherence to the rules and tradition of the legal profession and she, moreover, treated it as a profession. She maintained unswerving loyalty to her clients, devotion to the truth, and never gave less than the best she could give. It is never enough to say "we will miss her" because lawyers like Kenney are not replaced.'
"Scruggs was born in Gainesville, Florida, the daughter of a father who worked as a teacher and university administrator. Her mother, as an administrative secretary and a founder of the Florida Trails Association.
"Scruggs spent her childhood in Florida. Her sister said Kenney was an avid reader starting at a very young age. Sister Cynthy added, 'The words that come to my mind about Kenney are independent, indefatigable, curious, deeply affectionate and honest.'
"Scruggs graduated from Lake Weir High School in Florida in 1967. She then graduated from Florida State University in 1971. She went on to get her law degree from Southwestern University of Law in Los Angeles in 1980.
"Scruggs was a scrappy idealist in tie-dye blouses and blue jeans when she met her beloved partner, Owens Valley journalist John Robb Heston. In 1972, the couple lived in Independence, where she completed law studies by commuting 200 miles five days a week to Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles.
Scruggs started her law practice in Bishop in 1980. She handled criminal and family law cases and went on to specialize in protecting the rights of children caught in high-conflict custody cases.
"Mono County Superior Court Judge Mark Magit said, 'Kenney was a passionate and very effective advocate for her clients. Her tenacity and indomitable spirit were balanced by her ability to maintain perspective, sense of humor and her bright and engaging smile.'
Kenney and attorney Rick Wood squared off on hundreds of cases. Wood said, 'Kenney believed that she could make a difference in other peoples lives. Her professional life exemplified that belief. We will miss her terribly and remember her well.'
"Attorney Tom Hardy also remembered Kenney. He said, 'When I was first starting to practice law, Kenney Scruggs probably taught me as much about the courtroom as anyone - by being my opponent in many cases and my ally in others. More importantly, though, she was of the breed of lawyer who could argue like hell with you when court was in session and then have an amiable lunch where you could talk about anything, share ideas and even poke fun at the arguments that we were making just minutes before.'
"Throughout her legal career, Scruggs made time to pursue philosophical and religious studies and to tend to the gardens, fruit orchards and reflecting pools at her home on the northern edge of Independence. She was also an artist who decorated the shady retreat with hand-painted tile art.
"In the past few months, Scruggs, who died at her home on Wednesday, had been in failing health. 'She died as gracefully and as bravely as she lived,' Kessler said.
"Scruggs is survived by her father, William Scruggs Jr.; her mother, Margaret Scruggs; two sisters, Ann Scruggs and Cynthy Scruggs; devoted friend Benett Kessler, children of John Heston - Ellie Heston, John Heston and family, and fiance Robert Miller."
