She was born December 3, 1934, in Machias, the daughter of Oscar and Louise (Coffin) Carver. Bettina graduated from Beals High School, class of 1952. Following graduation, she graduated from Washington State Teachers College in Machias, Maine. After teaching in Maine for a few years, she and her husband, Clark Whitney, moved to Wrangell, Alaska. Later she and the family moved to Fairbanks where she furthered her education at the University of AK, completing her master's in education. Then on to Nondalton for some Native Village Service. After three years the pull sent her to Kenai for her final Alaska assignment. Then retirement and a move back to Jonesport in 2004 with her grade school sweetheart, Jesse Merchant. She was predeceased by a son, Brian Whitney; a brother, Richard Carver; and her father and mother, Oscar and Louise Carver. She is survived by her husband, Jesse Merchant; sons, Clark Whitney Jr. and Charles Whitney; grandchildren, Aiden, Maia, and Benjamin; and several nieces and nephews."
