[1167] Joseph was a soldier in the French and Indian Wars and in the War for Independence. NSDAR 215834 records: "Private. Capt. Richard Mayberry's Co., Col. Ebenezar [sic] Francis Regt. Enlisted 7 July 1779 - Discharged 25 September 1779. Service on the Penobscot Expedition - listed in payroll (MA Archives, Vol. 37, pp. 83 & 128) for Capt. Alexander McLellan's Co. of Col. Jonathan Mitchell's Regiment as having served July 7 to Sept. 25, 1779. Also Capt. John Reed's Co., Col. Samuel McCobb's Regt. Enlisted 8 Aug. 1781, Discharged 1 December 1781. Service in defense of seacoast. - Mass. Sailors and Soldiers, VIII:646." He resided at Gorham, and after the birth of his children (prior to 1784) moved to Bucksfield. {-See "Descendants of James Irish, 1710-1940," by Jennie J. McLellan (Katharine B. Lewis, editor; Portland: Smith & Sale, 1903), pp. 99, 437, 583. His birth date in Falmouth, ME and his parents are referenced in NEHGR for 1860, p. 145. His grave is from "Revolutionary War Graves Register," Clovis H. Brakebill, compiler (NSSAR, 1993). His marriage with Hannah is documented in "Baptisms and Admission from the Records of First Church in Falmouth, now Portland, Maine," Marquis Fayette King, comp., (Portland, ME.: Maine Genealogical Society, 1898), p. 49.
