[5665] Solon is subject of "Letters Home from Sea: The Life and Letters of Solon J. Hanson, Down East Sailor," by Lucy Jane Webster and Meg Ann Noah (Brookline, NH: Hobblebush Books, 2006). Solon died while serving as a sailor shipping with cotton from New Orleans to Russia - see death notice in The Rockland Gazette, 19 August 1858, which states he died aboard ship at Cronstadt (a port on the island of Kotlin in the narrow bay in which the Gulf of Finland terminates, along the shipping channel to St. Petersburg). LJW states the ship was the bark Picayune, built in Castine and based in New Orleans, and that Solon was the first aboard to die of cholera.
