She was born February 6, 1927 in Montgomery, Michigan to Olen and Sarah (Lake) Benjamin. Virginia married Donald Ball on June 2, 1946 and he preceded her in death in 2009. She was a 1944 graduate of Quincy High School. Virginia was a Librarian at the Quincy Elementary School and a part time farmer raising polled cattle. She was a member of the Quincy United Methodist Church and had been a Den Mother for Cub scouts. Virginia is survived by her sons, Donald (Sally) Ball of Coldwater, Robert (Denise) Ball of Rantoul, IL, Kenneth (Terri) Ball and Joseph (Michele) Ball both of Quincy; step daughter, Edith Patterson of Quincy; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Besides her husband Donald, Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Benjamin."

[61806] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 3 January 2017: "Hampden - Verna Sawtelle Colson, 80, the wife and 'dancing partner' of Herb Colson, her beloved husband of 60 years, went home to be with Jesus on December 29, 2016. 'Mom' passed from this life into glory surrounded by her loving family at the family home on Kennebec road in Hampden. Verna was born in Lubec, Maine August 23, 1936, the 5th child of the late Ida (Davis) and Carroll Sawtelle. Verna was a graduate of Lubec High School and a member of the Christian Temple Church in Lubec, where her 'second' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stockford, were the pastors. Church didn't start until Verna and her crew arrived. After her children were all in school, Verna took a CNA course and worked for Bangor District Nursing Association for 13 years. She then worked privately for many years in the Hampden area until she retired. She would tell you in a heartbeat however that her greatest job and the joy of her life was being Mom to her five children; Charlie and his wife Debra of Orrington, Stephen and his wife Carol of Veazie, Gary and his wife Becky of Troy, Gina and her husband Randy Scalise of Atlanta, Georgia, and Gregory and his wife Susan of Hudson. She was adored by her grandchildren Sarah and her husband Rob Dominick of Brewer, Mandy and her husband Raheem Jammeh of Brewer, Danielle and McKenzie Colson of Hudson, Josiah and Aiden-Rose Scalise of Atlanta and her great grandchildren: AJ and Luke Dominick and Dele, Tunde and Sade Jammeh. She was predeceased by her older sister, Laura Tyler, and brother, Charles Sawtelle. She is survived by her older siblings Tina Andrews of Titusville, Florida and Jack (Mae) Sawtelle of Amenia, New York, and her younger siblings Margaret (Richard) Russell and Mike (Diane) Sawtelle also of Amenia, New York. She was loved by and loved many extended family members. Verna had many wonderful friends and enjoyed dancing, attending basketball games and spending time with family. She was a long time member of Crosspoint Church (formerly known as Bangor Baptist) where she and her husband were facilitators of the Silver Saints. She was also a faithful member of the Maine Troop Greeters for many years. The family would like to thank all who called or sent cards to encourage Verna during her illness and to especially thank Joyce Jamison for all she did to help out and encourage both Herb and Verna. We would also like to thank the staff at Cancer Care of Maine, St. Joseph's Hospital and Hospice."
