Obituary - Absalom Rice: Juniata Tribune, 25 Jan 1923 - CIVIL WAR VETERAN FOUND DEAD AT LIBERTY VALLEY - After lying dead for two days, almost under his horse's feet, the body of Absalom Rice, Civil War veteran, aged 83 years, was found in the stable; of his barn at his home in Liberty Valley, a few miles west of Saville, on Friday. He lived alone. The body was found by David N. Hall, of Saville, who was passing by with a load of lumber and who stopped at the Rice home to use the telephone. On entering the house he found nobody there, and noticing that the barn door was open he went to the barn. On the stable floor, almost under the horse's hind feet, and partially covered with litter, he found the body of Mr. Rice. He immediately notified the neighbor by telephone and soon a number of persons gathered. A doctor was summoned, but it was obvious that the man was dead. There was a bruise on the left side of his face and also one on his breast. Just how he came to his death will probably never be certainly known. Some think he was kicked by the horse and others are of the opinion that he had a stroke and fell at the horse's heels, the bruises being caused by the animal stepping on him after he was dead. That he did not meet with foul play is apparently shown by the fact that in his pockets were found $200 in cash and a pension check, endorsed. He is believed to have been dead for at least two days before being found. He was last seen alive on Wednesday morning, and two days mail was found in his mail box. Absalom Rice was a son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Burd) Rice and was born in 1835. At the time of his death he was aged 83 years, 3 months and 15 days. He was married to Miss Martha Titzel, who has been dead for several years. Their surviving children are: John W. Rice, of Elliottsburg; Scott, of Saville; Orlando, of Pittsburgh; McClellan, of near Port Royal, and one daughter, Mrs. Lottie Rodder, of Philadelphia. The funeral was held on Monday, the services being conducted in the church at Saville, Rev. Herman Snyder officiating, and burial was made.
An Absalom Rice was drafted into the PA Volunteers 27 Sept 1864 and was mustered out 19 June 1865; another Absalom Rice enlisted in the PA Volunteers 9 March 1865 and was mustered out 25 Aug 1865 at Portsmouth, VA.
