[5027] Robert, 5th Lord of Annandale, was Regent of Scotland. He forfeited the Crown of Scotland by refusing to do homage to King Edward I of England. He is called "The Competitor." In 1291 he unsuccessfully competed with John Baliol for the crown of Scotland. Cf. John Gough Nichols, ed. "The Herald and Genealogist," 8 (1874): 325-348 at 336. http://www.geocities.com/janet_ariciu/OldScottishfamilies.html offers: "Robert Bruce The Competitor 1201-1295, the descendant of a Norman on whom the lordship of Annandale had been conferred by David I, was the son of Isabella, 2nd daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon. 1255 Robert was one of the guardians of young Alexander III but his career was for many years mainly in England. He supported Henry III against Simon de Montfort and after the latters overthrow at Evesham (1265) he became governor of Carlisle, sheriff of Cumberland and in 1268, Chief Justice of the Court of Kings Bench. His first marriage was to Isobel, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Glouscester and Hereford and 2nd to Christina, daughter of Sir William de Ireby. In 1270, he went on a crusade with Edmund, the youngest son of Henry III. In 1284, he acknowledged Margaret, 'the Maid of Norway' as heiress to the Scottish throne, but on Alexander IIIs death in 1286 he rose in arms to claim the throne in virtue of an alleged declaration by Alexander II (then childless) in 1238 that he, as a male, should be preferred to the daughter of his mothers elder sister. In 1290 on the death of 'the Maid of Norway', he renewed his claim and in 1291, along with his son, swore fealty to Edward I, to whose judgment the competition for the throne was remitted. After Edward appointed Balliol as King. Bruce resigned his rights to his son Robert, who had become Earl of Carrick by his marriage c1272 to Marjory, daughter and heiress of Neil, Earl of Carrick. Carrick who lived until 1304, was the father of King Robert I, to whom he had resigned his earldom in 1292 and of Edward, King of Ireland as well as of three other sons, Thomas, Alexander and Nigel all of whom were put to death by the English." Also cf. http://www.baronage.co.uk/bphtm-03/bruce-05.html and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_de_Brus,_5th_Lord_of_Annandale.

[27069] "Our Branches," by Mary Ann Jones, in http://www.gencircles.com provides his ancestry (not verified).
[44147] Find A Grave memorial 131615770 offers: "Robert de Scales IV was born in 1240 in Middleton, Norfolk, England. He was the son of Robert Scales (1219-1266) and Clemence Scales (unknown maiden name). Robert married Isabel Burnell (1252-1333) in Middleton, Norfolk, England in 1278. Robert and Isabel de Scales were the parents of the following known children: Catherine, Isabel and Robert V de Scales. Lord Robert de Scales was a Knight Templar and loyal supporter of Edward I in his campaigns in Wales, Scotland, France and Flanders. In 1277 Robert accompanied Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, in Edward I's first mass invasion of Wales to quash a rebellion by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Prince of Wales. The successful invasion led to the Treaty of Aberconwy, confining Llywelyn's authority to the west of the River Conwy. In March 1287 Robert left England for the English-owned Gascony, however, it was a short stay and by Jun 1287 he had been posted to Wales. Shortly before April 1298 Robert served in Flanders, perhaps accompanying the king when suing for peace with Philip IV of France. In 1299 he, and his heirs, were bestowed with the title, Baron Scales and were henceforth known as 'Lord Scales'. In 1299 Robert and his heirs were granted the title Baron Scales, and he was summoned to Parliament from 1299-1305. In 1301 Robert, along with one companion, two knights and eleven horsemen, accompanied Edward I on his campaigns against William Wallace in the First War of Scottish Independence. Robert's main residence was at Rivenhall (or Rewenhale) in Essex where he held a manor house and park. He also held land at Barkway and Newsells, Hertfordshire, Middelton, Lenn, Herewyk, Reynham, Pudding Norton, Gately, Wilton, la Hawe, Hoo and Ilsington in Norfolk, Haselingfeld in Cambridgeshire, Wridelington in Suffolk, Berton in Gloucestershire and Ouresby and Torneton in Lincolnshire. Robert died on 4 Sep 1305 in Middleton, Norfolk, England. His burial location is unknown at this time."

[50296] "Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 14 January 2019": "Marshfield - On Monday, January 14, 2019 at the age of 95, Herbert A. Hanscom Jr. of Marshfield, passed away after a brief stay at Marshall's Healthcare in Machias. Born on July 29, 1923 to Herbert A. Hanscom Sr. and Lelia (Denbow) Hanscom, he attended schools in Marshfield and Machias. He graduated from Machias Memorial High School at the age of 15 and immediately enrolled in 'the school of hard knocks'. That took him cutting wood and trees in Washington County and harvesting Christmas trees and potatoes in Aroostook County, all with the Albee family from Hadley Lake. In 1943 he married the 'match of his life', Flora (Purington). In 1944, he enlisted in the army and proudly served in Europe during most of WWII. Returning home in 1946, he worked for DiCenzo Construction for one year, after which he started Hanscom Construction. He passed the business on to 'Son Donald' in 1984. The company grew to include Flo's Wreaths, a sawmill, acres of blueberry land and much more. Together he and Flo built many businesses and were always committed to employing local people (whom they always treated like family) and supporting local businesses. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by son-in-law Michael Ashmore, grandson Joshua Hanscom, wife of 65 years, Flo, brothers Clinton and Raymond, sisters Eleanor Dorr and Frances Moran, brother-in-law Richard Purington, sister-in-law Joan Sanborn. He is survived by daughter June Ashmore, son Donald and wife Debbie, and daughter Deborah and husband Lyle Guptill, as well as six grandchildren: Mark Roy Ashmore, Joe Hanscom and wife Amanda, Erika (Guptill) and husband Ken Netzorg, Jessika Guptill and Travis, Monika Guptill, and Erik Guptill and wife Erin; and thirteen great-grandchildren: Eliza and Lelia (Erika); Zoie, Jude, Veda, Ayla, Ida, Elan and their dad, Dante, and Luca (Jessika); Emma, Wyatt, Nicholas, Charlotte (Erik). He is also survived by brother Ivan and wife Beverly, sisters-in-law Lillian (Raymond) Hanscom, Patricia (Stanley) Dennison, and Judy (Richard) Purington and brother-in-law Robert Sanborn . . . and his cat 'Baby Girl', as well as many nieces, nephews and good friends! Herb will be remembered for his constant smile, sense of humor, the tip of his WWII hat, and his kind heart."
[43813] Esther is daughter of Harry Karl Homan (1891-1920) & Ester Viola Foltz (1894-1920).
