[60520] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 3 July 2014: "Ashland and Presque Isle - Milford J. Letourneau, 89, died Monday, July 1, 2014 at Maine Veterans Home, Caribou, after a long illness. He was born October 22, 1924 in Ashland, a son of the late Peter and Almeda (Bell) Letourneau. Milford enlisted with the US Navy in 1942. He served as a seaman aboard a Landing Ship Transport during World War II Pacific Theater Operations and fought in the Battle of Leyte. He received his Honorable Discharge in 1946. Following his return to Ashland, he married Lillian Leach, together raising four children. He worked many years as a forester for local lumber and paper companies before his retirement in 1989. He was a skilled gardener and took great pride tending to his plants. Milford always had time to chat with the many people who stopped by to admire his garden, and he was always willing to share his bounties with friends, family and visitors. The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to Dr. Wood and Dr. Faloon for their many years of attentive care. He is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Lillian (Leach) Letourneau of Presque Isle; two sons, Terry Letourneau and Dale Letourneau, both of Ashland; a daughter, Susan Durrell of Ashland; five grandchildren, Kenny, David and Jennifer Letourneau, Wendy McKinney and Stacy Durrell; and several great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Milford is predeceased by a son, Dennis Letourneau, six brothers and a sister. A graveside service with military honors will be at Ashland Municipal Cemetery."
[52695] "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 19 January 2023: " Bucksport - Jean (Jeannie) M. Grindle died on Jan. 16, 2023, at the age of 96 after a long struggle with dementia. At the time of her death, she was a resident of the Maine Veterans Home in Bangor. She was the daughter of Mildred and Edward Parsons, born in Smith Falls, Ontario. She became a proud U.S. citizen on Dec. 16, 1953. She spent her childhood in Tacoma, Wash., and later moved to Los Angeles and San Bernardino, Calif. Her artistic talent led to her acceptance into art school in Los Angeles. When her mother became ill, she had to leave that school, but she could often be found sketching and doodling some incredible pictures. She met her husband, Roland Grindle, on a blind date. Apparently, that date went well for they were married for 57 years! They first made their home in San Bernardino, but later moved to Rolands native home in Bucksport. She told Roland that she and her mom were a 'package deal,' so Mildred made the move to Maine with them. Once in Bucksport, they built their own log home with the help of many close friends and neighbors, using logs that they had cut and hauled with a team of horses. They spent most of their lives together in that log home. Jeannie was a longtime member of the East Bucksport United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and helping to organize and cook for many church suppers. She could be counted on to sing the alto part in the hymns. Jeannie was always a 'short but feisty' redhead. She worked alongside Roland for many years in the family insurance agency where she always advocated for and enjoyed the company of 'the girls' at the office! They werent employees, they were 'family'! When she found something that needed doing, she would find a way. She was very active in the community. As her children grew, she took on the role of Girl Scout leader and 4-H leader. She was a founding member of the Bucksport Regional Health Center and helped to start Bucksport Community Concerns, which includes a local food pantry and thrift shop. She volunteered as a 'senior companion' and worked with the Cooperative Extension Program. She also served on the board of WHCA. Jeannie was recognized for her service when she was named the winner of the 1990 WLBZ 'For Those Who Care' Jefferson Award, and also was named the Bucksport Chamber of Commerce 'Citizen of the Year.' In her spare time Jeannie enjoyed gardening and preserving the bountiful crops she grew in her garden. She and Roland also tried their hand at collecting sap and making maple syrup. She quickly learned (when wallpaper began to peel of the wall) that boiling down sap was best done outside! Fishing was a great love of Rolands, so Jeannie gamely went along on many fishing and camping trips. In the winter months they enjoyed snowmobiling. She also loved to watch and feed the birds. Always softhearted, if a bird mistakenly crashed into her picture window she would go out and try to revive it. Her other interests included sewing and knitting. She was predeceased by her husband, Roland, infant son, Paul, her parents and her granddaughter, Brienne Grindle. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Bruce Augustadt, son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Cindy Grindle, grandchildren: Gayle Lyons (children Ben and Emma Lyons), Ramsey and Janelle Augustadt (children Pierson, Camille and Audrey), Abe Grindle and Arani Kajenthira, Luke and Michelle Grindle (child Bradley), Caleb and Kate Grindle (children Brooks and Henry), several cousins and many dear friends."
