[2611] AKA Svein "Forkbeard." See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweyn_Forkbeard. His life and times are dramatically portrayed in "The Last Apocalypse: Europe at the Year 1000 A.D.," James Reston, Jr. (New York: Doubleday, 1998). Sweyn reigned as King of Denmark 980-1014 and of England 1013-1014; a Viking. Buried in London, his remains were removed to Roskilde Cathedral, Denmark. He m. Gundil, probably a Polish princess, and later Sigrid, former wife of the King of Sweden. http://www.geocities.com/missourimule_2000/kingsofdenmark2.html offers: "According to Adam of Bremen, Sven was driven out of Denmark by Erik the Victorious just before Erik's death in 994 or 995. Following the death of Olaf I, King of Norway, in the Battle of Svoldr, Sven became ruler over part of Norway, with Eirik Hakonsson as his vassel. Sven was probably behind the raids on England from 1003 until 1012 following the St. Brice's Day Massacre of England's Danish inhabitants in November 1002. In 1013 he launched a full invasion. Northumbria quickly bowed to him, followed by Lindsay and the Five Boroughs. Sven fought his way through England and soon approached London. It is said the the Londoners destroyed the bridges that crossed the Thames (London Bridge is falling down). Svens army suffered heavy losses and was foced to withdraw. But Sven was accepted as ruler of England and, after Ethelred the Unready fled to Normandy, was crowned King on Christmas Day. Sven's nickname, which was probably used in his lifetime, refers to a long, pitchfork-like moustache, not to a full beard. Such a moustache was the fashion at the time, particularly in England." See "Magna Carta Ancestry: A Study in Colonial and Medieval Families," Douglas Richardson, Kimball G. Everingham (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2005), p. 61, which identifies Joan as daughter of William le Latimer of Scrampston, Yorkshire, and Alice, daughter of Walter Ledet of Corby, Northamptonshire. However, http://thepeerage.com/p359.htm states Joan's father is not known. A posting in Faceboook offers: "Joanna Latimer was the sister of Sir William Latimer & wife of Sir Alexander Comyn of Buchan, a younger son of Alexander Comyn, earl of Buchan. Her husband was thus a cousin of the John Comyn, lord of Badenoch, who was killed by Robert Bruce in 1306. Joanna was already a widow in March 1307, when she received a payment of 66s 8d from the English crown. This cash was presumably to compensate her for the disruption to her ability to access her 'terce' (the third of her late husband's income she was owed as a widow) now that Robert Bruce had made his bid for the kingship.
Her Scottish property was by the English exchequer in 1311 at £500 per annum. This may reflect the 'whole' of her late husband's estates & revenues, though not necessarily, as after the death of her brother-in-law John Comyn, earl of Buchan, in 1308 the prestigious earldom of Buchan would have been included in the rights Joanna - or more precisely her daughter Alice - could lay claim to. Around 1310, Joanna married her daughter Alice to Sir Henry Beaumont - a former household knight of Edward I, an influential figure in English politics, & an experienced war leader. This union was no doubt intended to recruit Beaumont's impressive military skills & fierce ambition in reviving Comyn fortunes in Scotland. Joanna's troubles were not over, however. On 24 February 1314, 'at the instance of Henry Beaumont' Edward II instructed royal officials 'to inquire & punish those evil-doers who committed outrages on Johanna Comyn of Buchan at Faxfleet, & carried off her chattels'. Joanna had received lands at Faxfleet in Yorkshire as compensation for her lost estates in Scotland, but apparently they had been ransacked by these mysterious 'evil-doers'. Edward's officers do not appear to have had much success in their efforts to deliver justice to Joanna, because on 5 July 1314 Joanna was granted relief from debts associated with her Faxfleet estates, seemingly to compensate her for her recent losses. At least her son-in-law's involvement in the case shows that her daughter's marriage had indeed secured Beaumont's influence in defending Joanna's rights, even if that was not enough to protect them."
