[2505] First Earl of Surrey; Companion of William the Conqueror; Lord of Reisgate, Conningsburgh and Bellencombre. Created Earl of Surrey, 1088. Was at Battle of Hastings, 1066. Founded the Cluniac Priory of St. Pancras, Lewes, 1077. Had other grants at Lewes, Castle Acre in Norfolk, etc. {per "The Extinct and Dormant Peerages of the Northern Counties of England," by John William Clay (London: 1913, p. 236).} The Warenne family originated at Varenne, Seine-Inf., two miles south of Arques on the River Varenne, and their seat and castle town became Bellencombre to the north {per "Anglo-Norman Families," Publications of the Harleian Society, 1951 (Vol. 103). An ancestry of William, d. 1088, is given in "Royal Ancestors of Magna Charta Barons," Carr P. Collins, Jr., Dallas, 1959.} His share of the "spoil" in England following the Conquest included 300 manors and Lewes Castle. He was wounded at the siege of Pevensey and may have died as a result. William was Count of Warenne in Normandy and is first mentioned regarding the battle of Mortemer in 1054; he attended the Council of Lillebonne where the decision was made to invade England. He was among the powerful Norman barons who accompanied the Conqueror. In 1067 he was one of the barons entrusted with the government of England in the Conqueror's absence in Normandy. He is buried in the Lewes Chapter House. For a discussion of issues in identifying his ancestry, see "Falaise Roll" (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co.), pp. 183-4. Cf. "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 258, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_de_Warenne,_1st_Earl_of_Surrey, http://genealogy.patp.us/warenne.shm and http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cousin/html/p102.htm.

Nancy and William had a child named Mary who died as an infant. http://www.yourothercousin.com/2010/12/john-jones-e-7.html offers:
"My mother's name was Nancy Jones before she married and her mother's name was Lydia Whitton and her father's name was John Jones. he was a Quaker from Wales but settled in New Jersey at an early day. After his family grew up he moved to Pennsylvania where his daughter Nancy was married to William Jewell, My grandfather Jewell's name was John. He died in New Jersey and was a member of the Church of England. He was a farmer but a shoemaker and carpenter for himself. His wife was from Holland. Her first name was Catherine and her last name was Bennett before she married. John Jewell (my grandfather) had a brother Hopewell and his wife's name was Patience. Hopewell and Patience Jewell and family moved to some place on Lake Ontario called Cussawanger. They took with them also a niece named Anna Jewell who afterward married Nathaniel Howard.this moving took place before the War of 1812. Anne Howard died when her girls were young. Katie was about thirteen or fourteen years old when she was brought to New Lisbon where Uncle Isaac Jewell lived. They kept Annie, the younger sister until she was a young woman when her father came and took her away. Katie earned her own lving by her labor, and while very young married Mr Fishbourne. She died in Wayne Co OH. She was reported exceedingly beautiful as was also her mother Anne Jewell Howard.
"Grandmother Lydia Jones had two sisters: Huldah and Polly Davenport.
"My father William Jewell was born in Sussex Co NJ, My mother Nancy Jones Jewell was born in NJ. They married in Fayette Co PA in Washington Bottom. they lived there until Nov 1814, when we moved to Wayne Co OH in a Pennsylvania Wagon. We llived there until my sister Hannah was one day old when fatehr died. Mother remained a widow."

William's obituary on the Internet at http://iagenweb.org/boards/madison/obituaries offers:
Winterset Madisonian - November 19, 1936 -
William Henry Paullin, a native Iowan and a resident of Madison county since the Civil War days, died at his home in Winterset, last Friday. He was 89 years of age.
Mr. Paullin was the son of William and Mary Paullin, and was born in Louisa county on June 10, 1847. His parents had come from Ohio to Iowa while it was still a territory.
When he was about 20 years old he came to Madison county where he had since resided. He was married to Esther M. Cline on June 10, 1874. They were the parents of eight children, two of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. A. R. Clark, died in 1926.
In 1894 Mr. Paullin united with the Methodist church at Fairview. Upon moving to Winterset five years later, he transferred his membership to the church in this city.
On June 10, 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Paullin celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. The following August Mrs. Paullin died, and since that time his health had gradually failed.
