[2176] See "Medieval English Ancestors of Certain Americans," Carl Boyer III (Santa Clarita, CA, 2001), p. 111. Miles was Earl of Gloucester in 1141 and of Hereford. Queen Maud granted him the castle of St. Briavels and the Forest of Dean and created him Earl of Hereford about 1140-41. He is buried in the Chapterhouse of the Llantony Priory outside Gloucester. He was accidentally shot while hunting on Christmas Eve day in the Forest of Dean, and died soon after. His sons are Roger (d. 1155), Walter (last heard of in 1159), Henry (killed in Gwent in 1175 by prince Seisyll ap Dyfnwal, his murder provoking later that year the infamous massacre at Abergavenny when Seisyll and his family and friends were invited to a banquet and then slaughtered, an event possibly arranged by William de Braose), William (did not live to succeed), and Mahel (d. in 1175 in the fire at Bronllys Castle when a large stone fell on his head).
