Find A Grave Memorial 38419321 offfers: "Thomas Brigham fathered the first Brigham generation in America. History books have called him 'The Emigrant' or 'The Puritan'. In the spring of 1635 a group of adherents of Rev. Thomas Shepherd, who had been preaching in Buttercombe, England, a few miles north of Home-on-Spalding-Moor, decided to migrate with him to the new world in order to escape religious persecution. On April 18 1635, they embarked on the ship "Suzan and Ellen" on a voyage from Bristol to Boston, that would last sixty-four days. Appearing in the passenger list: Thos. Brigham, aged 32; Symon Crosby, husbandman, aged 26;
Ann Crosby, Uxer, aged 25; Tho. Crosby, child aged 8 weeks. Ann was Thomas's first cousin. Soon after reaching New England, Thomas Brigham settled Cambridge, MA. His 14 acre homestead adjoining that of Simon Crosby. He owned a windmill and records show he owned a third of all the swine in town. Thomas Brigham was made by the general court a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Company, 18 Apr 1637 and thus became a member of the body politic and acquired the right to vote. He was selectman 1640, 1642, 1647. A constable from 1639 to 1642. In 1637 when Thomas was about 34, married Mercy Hurd, aged about 21. (The name Hurd is only traditional, and the Rice Genealogy by Ward is responsible for the tradition.)"

[2686] http://www.britannia.com/bios/ebk/hoel1by.html offers (2001): "Hoel I Mawr, King of Brittany - (born c.491) - (Welsh-Hywel, Latin-Hovelius, English-Howel). As a son of Budic II's first marriage, King Hoel the Great was nephew to the famous High-King Arthur of Britain. Tradition says he spent much of his youth at the King's Court and, although he returned to Brittany when his father was recalled, he was soon asked back to help his uncle overcome the Saxon scourge. Hoel supposedly landed at Southampton and immediately moved north with a considerable army to assist King Arthur at the Battle of Dubglas, the Siege of Caer-Ebrauc (York) and the Battle of Celidon Coit, before being besieged himself at Caer-Brithon (Dumbarton Rock). Hoel's greatest hour, however, was at the triumphant Battle of Mount Badon. Later he took part in Arthur's continental campaigns, conquering Gaul and enabling Arthur to establish his government in Paris! Hoel then returned to his own Kingdom, where King Tristram of Lyonesse was supposed to have helped him to victory during a Breton Civil War. Hoel probably ruled jointly in Cornouaille with his ageing father. They, apparently, both died in the same year (545) and were succeeded by Hoel's eldest son, Tewdwr Mawr. Literary writers have transformed Hoel into a Knight of the Round Table."

http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/FrancisTalbot(5EShrewsbury).htm offers:
"A shrewd man, was able to accommodate himself to all the changes that took place over the difficult years between 1538 and 1560, the period of his lordship. Though a Catholic, the fifth Earl made himself agreeable to all and his religion did not prevent him from receiving certain of the Beauchief Abbey lands when they were broken up and distributed during the latter years of King Henry VIII. Steering a careful line between the Protestantism of Edward VI, the Catholic Queen Mary and the Protestant Elizabeth I, Francis was able to prevent trouble between the North and South of England.
"The involvement of Francis Talbot, fifth Earl of Shrewsbury, in national political life in the reign of Henry VIII was limited. After his father´s death in 1538, he was an infrequent attender at Court. This should not be surprising. It was unnecessary for noblemen of ancient standing and possessed of large landed estates to serve the King constantly at court. Although, during the years of the Protector Somerset rule of England, he took part in the Scottish invasion.
"The Imperial Ambassador described him as 'one of the most powerful men in the kingdom'. The Duke of Somerset attempted to recruit Shrewsbury when the Earls of Warwick, Arundel and Southampton, with Sir Richard Southwell and Thomas Arundell, began to plot against him. But Shrewsbury joined the large majority of Counsellors that was opposed to Somerset. In 1549 he replaced Robert Holgate, Bishop of Llandaff as Lord President of the Council of the North, a post in which he proved to be an excellent administrator.
"At the death of Edward VI, both Shrewsbury and his son signed the device for the succession to the crown.
"Shrewsbury both advocated and prepared for the Parliament of Mar 1553, and his involvement in the succession conspiracy was reluctant enough for him to make his peace with Mary and continue to wield his patronage during her reign.
"Shrewsbury did not agree with with the religious settlement of 1559, on Elizabeth's accesion, but again his loyalty to the crown was overcoming any religious scruples. He play little part in government, and died 25 Sep 1560."
