[58545] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 22 January 2025: "Somesville - William 'Bill' Crosby Fernald, 85, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2025, in Venice, Florida, surrounded by his loving wife, Ruth and daughters, Kathy Fernald and Missy Allard. He was born February 18, 1939, in Somesville, ME, the son to Robert G. and Norma J. (Crosby) Fernald. Affectionately known as 'Sweet William' to some, or as Bill to many, he graduated from Mount Desert High School in 1957 and participated in the All-State Band playing a saxophone. Bill then decided to go to work in the family business and graduated from the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences to obtain his Funeral Practitioner Diploma in Boston. While there he made many good friends in the funeral business. Bill was a member of the Maine Funeral Directors Association and served as its president for a year. He was the President of A. C. Fernald Sons Inc., where he worked in operating the garage portion of the business. He was also president of Jordan-Fernald Funeral Homes and enjoyed helping and caring for many families over his career. Bill loved people and could strike up a conversation with about anybody so he enjoyed reaching out through many organizations. He was a member of the Mt. Desert Lodge #140 A.F. & A.M. and was a 32-degree Master Mason. Bill then joined the Anah Shrine, was a 50-year member and eventually became President of the Hancock County Shrine Club, former member of the Lobster Boat Unit, retired member of the Anah Convertibles, and an active member of the ROJ. Bill helped at many Shrine Circuses as well as Super Suppers over the years. Bill was a member of the Mt. Desert Lions Club and served as King Lion for a year. He volunteered as a board member for the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce and served as its president for a year. Bill served as a Board Member of the First National Bank. Bill was a member of the Acadia Corvette Club, Bass Harbor Yacht Club, Causeway Club, and was a founder and first commodore of the Mt. Desert Yacht Club. He loved collecting all kinds of things such as his duck decoys, guns, cars and even marbles. Bill enjoyed being the commanding officer of the Summer Song. Over the years and could be found moored between Swans Island and Orono Island, where there was some great clam digging. He was the owner and operator of Maine Seaside Cottages in his later years and looked forward to wintering in Florida. Bill loved to dance, play the piano, travel the world, and spend time at Molasses Pond. Bill also loved conversation, loved people, and lived life to the fullest. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Brunetti Fernald of Bass Harbor; children, Katherine Fernald of Somesville, Rebecca Carbone and husband, Dano, of Denver, Amy Adcock and husband, Jon, of San Diego, and Michelle Allard and husband, David, of Durham; stepchildren, Paul Brunetti of Arkansas, and Sally Brunetti of Somesville; grandchildren, William Blake and wife, Danielle, Ethan Blake and wife, Carli, Caroline Fernald, Gabriella Carbone, Isabella Carbone, Madison Adcock Nowlen, Fletcher Adcock, and Devin Allard; stepgrandchildren, Zach Brunetti, Sam Hoff, and Kate Hoff; three great-grandchildren, Liam Blake, and Zaydon and Maesie Allard; a beloved brother, Thomas 'Tom' J. Fernald and wife, Carroll; partner of the late James 'Jim' R. Fernald, Christii Maquillan; former wife and mother of his five children, Jeanne Fernald; and many dear friends he has made over the years. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his cherished son, James 'Jim' R. Fernald; and a granddaughter, Lindsey May Allard."
