As a young man, a weaver, he married his first wife, Constance (?) _____. They had three children: Constance, William, and Giles. In 1608 the family moved to London. Stephen decided to go to Jamestown, Virginia to start a new life for himself and, later, for his family. Three ships left England, but two sank in a hurricane. The third, on which Stephen sailed, became stuck on a coral reef off Bermuda. The passengers went ashore and in the following nine and a half months built two smaller ships to continue the trip to Jamestown. After a few months in Jamestown Stephen returned to England to find his wife, baby, and son, William, had died. Stephen moved to London. Stephen Hopkins was referred to as a merchant and a planter in Plymouth records. The home in England of Stephen Hopkins was just outside of London Wall on the high road entering the city at Aldgate in the vicinity of Heneage House. In this neighborhood lived John Carver and William Bradford of the Mayflower Company; Robert Cushman, the London agent for the Pilgrims; and Edward Southworth, who later came to New England. Stephen was called a tanner or leathermaker at the time of the 'Mayflower' voyage. In the spring of 1618 Stephen married his second wife, Elizabeth Fisher. They had one daughter, Damaris. A son, Oceanus, was born on the 'Mayflower' before landing at Plymouth. Both Damaris and Oceanus died young. Five more children were born at Plymouth. Descent from Stephen Hopkins has been proven through only Constance, Giles, the second Damaris, and Deborah. Stephen was one of the forty-one signers of the Mayflower Compact. He served as an Assistant Governor 1629-32 and 1633-35. He died sometime between 6 June and 17 July 1644. His will and inventory of his estate are on record at Plymouth. Diniz, in English, Denis (1261-1325), king of Portugal (1279-1325), the son of King Alfonso III. Diniz's reign was notable for the termination of the wars between Portugal and the united kingdoms of Leon and Castile, achieved by intermarriage between his family and that of King Ferdinand IV of Leon and Castile; and for encouragement of Portuguese agriculture, trade, and arts. He founded schools for the study of agriculture and improved methods of cultivation; because of his interest in agriculture he became known as Re Lavrador (the Farmer King). Diniz also made Portuguese the language of the law courts in his kingdom. A poet himself, he was a patron of artists and musicians and of education, establishing the University of Coimbra (at Lisbon, 1290; moved to Coimbra, 1306). He made (1294) a commercial treaty with England that benefited Portuguese trade and established (1317) a royal navy. He was succeeded by his son, Alfonso IV.
