Two brothers David and Andrew Dick, both of Shiloh. and one sister, Mrs. John Elliott, of Spring Mills, also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Lutheran church in Shelby with Rev. Bruce Young officiating. Burial will be made In the Oakland cemetery." A post on Facebook offers: "Elizabeth Stafford did not marry for love, even if later memory tried to soften the edges of it. In 1512, Thomas Howard came to seek her hand. He was ambitious, sharp, and already rising fast at Henry VIIIs court as part of the Howard familys recovery after the ruin they had suffered under Richard III. Elizabeth, though, had originally been promised elsewhere. She had been close to Ralph, the future Earl of Westmorland, and seems to have expected that match to go ahead. It did not. That mattered less than it should have, because marriage in her world was not really about personal feeling. It was a contract built around property, alliance, rank, and survival. Elizabeth was still in her teens. Howard was nearly forty and needed a wife who could strengthen his position and give him sons. By the end of 1512 they were married, and she was already being called Lady Howard. The marriage began with absence. Howard soon left for war, and Elizabeth was left to adjust to married life while her husband chased honour abroad. Like many women at court, she was expected to wait, endure uncertainty, and hold her place while male glory was made elsewhere. That was the bargain. Men won fame in battle. Women lived with the cost. When Howard distinguished himself in the campaigns that followed, especially in the period around Flodden, Elizabeth rose with him. He was made Earl of Surrey, and she became Countess of Surrey. Her status changed overnight, not because she had chosen the path that brought her there, but because in Tudor England a womans rank was tied tightly to the fortunes of her husband. It is a neat example of how brutal and practical aristocratic marriage could be. Elizabeth lost the match she had wanted, was given the match that suited her family, and then watched her identity rise with a husband who had been chosen for her. That was not romance.
