[52731] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 14 December 1984, p. 9: "The wife of the chairman of the board of the Dead River Group of Companies died Wednesday in a New York hospital after suffering a stroke Tuesday at her New York City apartment. Ruth Eleanor Rich Hutchins would have celebrated her 76th birthday on Friday. 'We will have the service on her birthday,' said Curtis Hutchins, her husband of 53 years. Hutchins was bom in 1908 outside Boston and grew up in Wellesley Hills, Mass. She graduated from Smith College in 1930. She married Curtis Hutchins the following year and they moved to Bangor, where they still live. In her youth Mrs. Hutchins was an avid golfer, playing in father/daughter tournaments in the Boston area. She continued with the sport after moving to Maine, 'dominating the sport,' according to one observer. She was state champion in 1937 and 1938, recalled Dr Constance Carlson, who competed with her on the links. 'She beat me on the way to one of those,' Dr. Carlson said, adding that Mrs. Hutchins 'was a real student of the game' and a 'wonderful person' with whom to play. She gave up the sport when World War II limited the availability of gasoline. Her focus became her family, two daughters and a son. She loved to travel and took her children on many trips to places such as India, Africa, Iran and the Middle East. Later she took her six grandchildren on numerous trips abroad. Her home on Kenduskeag Avenue contains souvenirs from many trips, such as brass knobs on the front door to keep elephants away. Her home also contains many fine paintings, attesting to her love of art. She was generous in her contributions in support of the arts and of Maine artists, said her husband Her interests included the future of animals threatened with extinction and she shared time and money with the Jersey Zoo on the Isle of Jersey near England, a facility dedicated to the preservation of threatened species. In her younger years, she was active in the social life of Bangor, her husband said. She also was involved in numerous volunteer activities, including membership in the Junior Welfare League of Bangor, which later became the Bangor Junior League. She served on the boards of directors of the Bangor YWCA, the Children's Home on Ohio Street, and was a member of the Shakespeare Club. She was selected in 1955 as a trustee for Colby College in Waterville, a position she held until 1970. She is survived by her husband, her daughters Hilda and Hope; her son Christopher; and six grandchildren." Ruth is daughter of Chester Fremont Rich (1883-1941) & Lillian Pearl Smith (1884-1974; m. 2 January 1907 in IL).
