[1425] John, Warden of the Scottish March and Lieutenant of Aquitaine, was a "follower of John of Gaunt and a famous soldier in the French wars of Edward III...continued the policy of strengthening the family's position by marriage...." {-Encyc.Brit.,`56,16:271-2} Admiral of the fleet, 1360, etc. John m. (2) Elizabeth Latimer, Baroness Latimer of Corby, and they had John de Neville, 6th Lord Latimer (b 1382, d. 10 Dec 1430) and Elizabeth de Neville, Baroness Latimer (b. 1388). When scarcely five years old his father carried him to witness the battle of Durham; he was continuously in active military service and was made a Knight of the Garter by King Edward. He gave the great Nevill Screen to Durham Cathedral, and built the greater part of the present Raby Castle. [57382] Roberta's obituary: "South Hope - Roberta M. Staples, age 89, died peacefully, Monday, June 3, 2019. Born in Rockland, to Gertrude (Johnston) Sylvester Davis and Edward Sylvester, Roberta married Arthur Staples in 1946 and together they raised four children. In 1958, she joined the First National Bank of Rockland, which later became Maine National Bank, until she retired as a Loan Officer in 1982. Roberta was fortunate to enjoy a long retirement during which she and her husband spent many winters in Florida where they formed enduring friendships with other retirees. Her favorite pastimes were gardening, canning the produce from her garden, cuddling with the numerous cats who owned her over the years and spending time with her family. She had a knack for putting delicious meals together and one friend insisted her fish chowder was the absolute best. She was cherished and loved by all and lived a long, happy life. Roberta is survived by her beloved husband of 72 years, Arthur Staples; her daughter Carol Staples of Thomaston; her son Richard Staples and his wife Katharina of Rockland; her son Bruce Staples and his wife Louise of Sydney; her daughter Deborah Burns and her husband John of Camden; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and a large, extended family. "
[29203] This line is from "Ancestors of American Presidents, 2009 Edition,' Gary Boyd Roberts (Boston: NEHGS, 2009) which states Abraham is son of William Tilton (b. ca. 1589, d. ca. 1653 in Lynn, MA). See "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire," Noyes, Libby & Davis (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2002), p. 686, which state Abraham was apprenticed 5 Dec 1653 to John Hood og Lynn, who transferred him to his brother, Peter Tilton, who then sent Abraham to Hampton to his step-father Shaw; Abraham settled in Wells in 1671.
