[6829] John is son of Nathaniel Butler and Blanche Blanger. John and Betsynell r. (1976) at Millinocket, ME. Ancestry.com offers: "Butler Name Meaning - English and Irish: from a word that originally denoted a wine steward, usually the chief servant of a medieval household, from Norman French butuiller (Old French bouteillier, Latin buticularius, from buticula 'bottle'). In the large households of royalty and the most powerful nobility, the title came to denote an officer of high rank and responsibility, only nominally concerned with the supply of wine, if at all. Anglicized form of French Boutilier."
[11892] Margaret is dau. of Sir Ralph de Goushill of Goxhill, Linconshire, and Hawise, dau. of Fulk Fitz Warin. "The Complete Peerage," Vol. VI, p. 42 states that Sir Ralph de Goushill is son of Sir Piers de Goushill (or Goushull or Gousle, footnote : These are three of the variants; there are several more), of Goxhill, co. Lincoln, son and heir of Sir Giles de Goushill (with footnotes in regards to appointments) of the same, was summoned for military service in Wales in 1277 and 1282. On 28 June (1283) 11 Edward I he was summoned to attend the King at Shrewsbury. He married Ela, daughter of Sir Ralph de Camoys, (footnote : Toppesfield Manor in Essex was given to Piers de Goushill by Ralph de Camoys in free marriage with Ela, his daughter and this manor descended to the Despencers), and died before 1 July 1286, when any dignity which may be supposed to have been created by the writ of 1283 descended to his son and heir Ralph de Goushill. This Ralph has a footnote : This Ralph de Goushill was born about 1274 (aged 12 on feast of St.Leonard 14 Edw I) On 18 April 1288 (Close Roll) Eustache de Hache was granted his lands in Gedney, during his minority. He married Hawise, daughter of Sir Fulk FitzWarin, and died before 30 August 1294, being still under age. His widow had dower assigned 30 January 1294 (5 Close Roll), and appears to have married, 2ndly, Robert de Hoo. The heir of Ralph de Goushill was his infant daughter Margaret, who was born in 1294, and was married, 1stly, to Philip le Despencer, who died 24 September 1313. She was still under age when she was married, 2ndly, to Sir John de Ros. He was dead in or before 1339, and she died 29 July 1349. http://www.tomkinshome.com/familyweb/aqwg181.htm offers concerning her mother's apparent second marriage: "Sir Robert de Hoo son of Sir Robert de Hoo had a grant in Luton 30 November 1310 and married Hawise apparently widow of Ralph de Goushill and daughter of Fulk Fitz Warin. She is named as Dame Hawise de Goushill in a grant of Stopsleyand of a messuage and land in Wheathampstead in 1321 and as Hawise de Goushilllate wife of Sir Robert Hoo , she and her heirs had a grant of the manor of Dunsby (Lincoln) in 1345, among the witnesses being Thomas de Goushill. By Sir Robert de Hoo, Hawise was mother of Sir Thomas Hoo, as appears by a release to Sir Thomas Hoo and Hawise, his mother, of dower in West Hyde, Luton, 11 March1330, and by a grant to Dame Hawise de Hoo and Thomas Hoo her son 06 January 1328/9." - this web site refers to "The Complete Peerage" by G. E. Cokayne, Vol. VI, page 567 (Hoo), published 1982 by Sutton.
[51799] Edgar is son of Alfred Hamlin Gordon (1859-1928) & Annie Mae Hooper (1869-1923). "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 8 March 1963, p. 18: "Eastbook - Edgar S. Gordon, 72, died Thursday at a Bangor hospital after a long illness. He was born November 29, 1890 at Franklin, son of Hamlin and Annie (Hooper) Gordon. "The Ellsworth American [Ellsworth, Maine]," 28 September 2023: "Brooklin - Carlton C. Gray Sr. passed away on Sept. 26, 2023, at home in Brooklin. He was born Oct. 12, 1931, in Brooksville, the first-born son of Walter C. and Margaret (Segar) Gray. The family soon moved to Brooklin, where Carlton lived nearly his entire life. He graduated from Brooklin High School in 1950 along with his younger brother Belford. Soon after high school, Carlton married Evelyn M. Ryder of Ellsworth. Together, they raised four sons. Carlton worked as a carpenter and builder, first with his father, and later with youngest son, Jerry. Carlton was active in the community, coaching Little League baseball, serving on the Brooklin Volunteer Fire Department, and was a past member of the Brooklin Oddfellow's Lodge. Carlton and Evelyn enjoyed square dancing and made many friends around eastern Maine and Canada. They also enjoyed camping with family and friends, often combining the camping trips with square dancing events. Evelyn passed in 1994 after a 13-year battle with breast cancer. Years later, Carlton reconnected with Roberta Staples Allen, a high school classmate, and they maintained a special relationship until Carlton's death. Known for his memory of Brooklin history, Carlton donated many photographs and documents to the Brooklin Keeping Society. Carlton was predeceased by his parents, wife Evelyn, brother Belford, granddaughter Lily, and grandson Christopher. Carlton is survived by his four sons, Carlton Jr. and wife Paige of Dudley, N.C., Scott, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Stuart and wife Laura of East Blue Hill, and Jerry and wife Laurie of Brooklin. Carlton is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and by dear friend, Elizabeth Hutchins. Carlton's most cherished relationships include Roberta Allen and grandson Josh Gray."
Carlton and the family have been grateful for the loving care provided by Scott and Kathy Holden, and by Susan Gray. The family also thanks the staff of Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital and of Northern Light Hospice for the compassionate and professional care they provided. Carlton especially enjoyed the compassionate care and friendship of Northern Light Hospice worker Nancy, who came nearly every day and had a special bond with Carlton.
