[56407] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 8 July 2024: "Bucksport - On July 3, 2024, Richard A. Bowden left us suddenly to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and his loving wife, Ava, who left us a short time ago. He was born on May 13, 1942, the son of Luther and Emma Bowden of Verona Island. He went to grade school in a 2-room schoolhouse on Verona Island, where he started playing saxophone in the band well into high school. He was a boy scout and spent time at Camp Roosevelt. After high school he joined the Navy in 1960. He served on the destroyer and sub hunter the U.S.S Willis A. Lee, one of the fastest destroyers the Navy had. He served for 4 years and during leave in 1962 he asked his sweetheart, Ava, to marry him. They got engaged on July 4, 1962. They later married July 11, 1964, and lived on Central St., where they had two beautiful children, Aaron and Amy. He worked at St Regis Paper company until he got an apprenticeship where he learned the trade of Master Machinist from his father Luther. He could make anything out of metal, even an occasional Lobster boat part for those in need. While working in the mill he became a Firefighter and EMT for Bucksport Fire Dept in 1989 and a Bail Bondsman for the Police Dept. He retired from the mill after 38 years and joined his daughter Amy in driving a school bus for the town of Bucksport. They did many trips together and enjoyed the love of bussing. He started in the American Legion in 1975 and was the Commander of Post 157 in Stockton Springs. In 1989 he reorganized and opened Bucksport Post 93 where he was the Adjutant/Financial officer and later became the Commander in 1995 and held this position until his passing. He held many other positions including Hancock County Commander in 1997-1998, 5th District Commander in 1995, then Adjutant/Financial Officer 2000-2006. He joined the 40/8 in 1994 and held many positions in Voiture 1596 of Hancock County and Voiture 1024 of Waldo County. Including Chef de Gare, Grand Du Maine 40/8 and Cleminot National in 2012-2013. During his time as Commander of Post 93 he paved the way for the installation of the Veterans Memorial on the Bucksport waterfront, for All our Fallen Loved Ones. He raised money every year to send students to Dirigo competitions. He and his post led many parades over the years for any occasion when needed. He was a member of the Bucksport Rod and Gun Club and was a hunter and fisherman. He loved the many motorcycles he owned, mostly Harley Davidson's and enjoyed riding with his wife on the back and doing many toy runs with his daughter Amy and brother Norman. He kept a tidy yard and loved his vegetable garden and was a master on the grill. He was very proud of the wonderful lives his children made for themselves. He became the 'Papa' to 2 beautiful grandchildren that filled his heart with immeasurable love for 26 years and his love for them was undeniable to the end. He leaves behind his only brother, Norman Bowden and wife, Pam; his son, Aaron Bowden; daughter, Amy and her husband/son, Vince Minnick; grandchildren, Elizabeth Emma and Nathaniel Richard Bowden; nieces and nephew, Alisha McCann, Heather Harriman, Sam, Vicki, Mary and many cousins."
