[37949] This person is from Adam D. Wing's unverified Wing Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2014. Ancestry.com offers: "Campbell Name Meaning - Scottish: nickname from Gaelic cam 'crooked', 'bent' + beul 'mouth'. The surname was often represented in Latin documents as de bello campo 'of the fair field', which led to the name sometimes being 'translated' into Anglo-Norman French as Beauchamp. In New England documents, Campbell sometimes occurs as a representation of the French name Hamel."
[37023] This person is from the unverified family tree by Donna Miller in Ancestry.com in 2014.
[60083] Benjamin is son of Simon Crosby (1800-1872) & Esther I. Lewis (1802-1889; m. 23 February 1821 in Vinalhaven, Knox Co., ME).
Richard, of East Coker, Somersetshire, came to Massachusetts about 1638. He and Edith also had John Dodge, b. Dec 1631 in East Coker, Somersetshire, and Joseph Dodge, b. 1651 in Beverly, MA.
"Colonial Families," 1:133 offers: "The founder of the Dodge family was Peter Dodge of the town of Stopworth, in the County of Chester; gentleman; who did such loyal and valiant service for the good content of his Sovereign Lord, King Edward I, that he and his heirs forever were entitled to have, use, and enjoy a coat of arms fully described in a Patent dated 8th April, 1306, in the Herald's College; his descendants, John Dodge of Rotham, in Kent, was granted in 1547 a confirmation of the early Patent; William and Richard Dodge, who came to Salem, Massachusetts, in the 'Lyons Whelp,' 10th July, 1629, were the lineal descendants of Peter and John Dodge."
"New England Families," 2:851 offers: "Richard Dodge, the immigrant ancestor, born about 1602, in Somersetshire, England, died at Beverly Massachusetts, June 15, 1671. He came to Salem, Massachusetts, in 1638 and 'desired accomodation'. He lived for a time on his brother William's land, and then settled on 'Dodge Row', in North Beverly, not far east of Wenham Lake . . . . He was received into the church at Salem, May 5, 1644, and in 1667 was one of the founders of the First Church, now of Beverly. He was a loyal church member, and liberal towards its support. He was also liberal in educational mattes, as is shown in 1653, when he was on a list of twenty-one subscribers to Harvard College. He name was first, while the next largest sum was but one-fourth as much as his." - the article continues to elaborate on his family.
Also see "Genealogy of the Dodge family of Essex County, Mass. 1629-1894," Joseph Thompson Dodge (Madison, WI: Democrat Printing Co., 1894).
