[6368] NOTE: The parents and sibling(s) of Dr. William Dyer are NOT known. This is an unlikely and speculative link, included here for reference only. {See Comments for reputed son, Dr. William Dyer. In a typescript copy of "The Dyer Family History." by Norman A. Greene, at the Maine Historical Society in Portland (1991), William is identified as baptised 19 September 1609, son of William Dyre, church warden of Kirksly Loythrope, Lincolnshire, England - this identification is NOT verified. Greene gives other information, including: William arrived at Salem, Mass. in June, 1629; he married 27 October 1633 Mary Barrett at St. Martin-in-the-Field Church in England; they became Puritans in December, 1635; William was chosen clerk of the commission to fortify Fort Hill at Boston, MA in January, 1636; Mary became a close friend of Quaker leader Anne Hutchinson (and walked out with her when Hutchinson was excommunicated by the Puritans); in 1638 William was among those driven out of Mass. and with Roger Williams and others founded Rhode Island where William was colony secretary, clerk of Newport and Attorney General (1650); in 1653 William was Capt. and commander of naval operations against the Dutch; he accompanied Roger Williams to England to get a charter for the colony - Mary had preceded them to England and remained there for 5 years, becoming a Quaker minister, returning to Boston to preach the faith in 1659 where she was martyred 01 June 1660. I have NOT confirmed any of this! - including the assertion that Anne Hutchison was wife of Samuel Dyer, William's brother. Best research concludes that the parents of Dr. William Dyer of Truro, shown here as a son, are NOT PROVEN! - AEM} Norris Dyer (nrdyer@attbi.com) offered by Internet 2/98: "There are several references I value. One is 'Mary Dyer, Biography of a Rebel Quaker,' by Ruth Plimpton (Boston: Branden Publishing Co., 1994). The second is 'The Dyers from England to Cape Elizabeth, 1557-1987, Descendants of Henry, Third Son of Doctor William Dyer,' by Marcelia Dyer Rennard Berry typed manuscript, copy in Cape Elizabeth Library, Maine).. The manuscript shows Samuel Dyer married to Ann Hutchinson 1660-1662, with (Dr.) William Dyer being born in 1663. Other records, including yours, show Dr. Dyer as being born in 1653 (that is on gravestone, also). The Plimpton book does not spend much time on the first Dyer's children, and (unfortunately does not mention any of Samuel's children.) It does suggest that Samuel was married to Anne by at least 1652. So maybe their first child could have been Dr. Dyer. One problem I have with this, though, is the fact that the rest of Samuel's children show birthdates of 1665 and onward (per Berry) although she does not have dates for Elisha and Anne. This break is disturbing. "Here is what Berry says about Samuel and Anne about this time: 'William (3) was born in Boston before Samuel and Anne moved to Newport, Rhode Island [quoting STATISTICS OF BOSTON 1600, Barnstable Sturgis Library]. It is from this man that the Maine Dyers descend. Records show that a Dr. Henry Taylor (2) and his second wife Mary (2) of Boston and Long Island, New York, purchased land at the north end of the city of New York; land previously owned by a quaker friend of Mary Barrett Dyer (1) (who was hanged). In April of 1675, Major William Dyer (2) younger brother of Samuel, bought four and a half acres of land from Dr. Taylor (2). It seems probable that William (3), son of Samuel (2), must have visited his uncle William (2) and met Mary Hatch Taylor (3), daughter of the Doctor (2) [refers to authority, Donald Wiggins]. As there was no medical school in the colonies prior to 1675, one studied medicine under a doctor. It seems probably, therefore, thaat William (3) studied with Dr. Taylor and married his daughter in Dececmber of 1686....' My line comes from Dr. Dyer's third son, Henry Dyer, who married Anna Small." Sheepscot, ME is now part of the town of Newcastle. The area was first explored in 1604, and the locale of Sheepscot Falls had fifty families in residence in 1631. William, "late of Saco," had a log cabin on a slope towards Dyer's River about a half-mile from the falls in 1664/65. Cf. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~legends/dyer.html in 2003. [24778] http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~celticlady/luttrell/geoffery_de_luterel.htm offers: "Sir Hugh Luttrell served in France with Richard II and Henry IV, and held a spectrum of appointments. He was, in succession, Lieut. of Calain, Mayor of Bordeaux, Govenor of Marfluer, and Great Sentinal of Normandy. He was M.P. (Member of Parliament) for Somersetshire in the reign of Richard II, and subsequently for Devonshire. On the death of his cousin, John, he inherited East Quantoxhead, and when Old Lady de Mohun died in 1404, hastened to pursue his claim to Dunster. He began by dispatching the tenants and moving into the Castle in time to celebrate Christmas 1405. This stung the Mohuns into action and they followed a scramble for the deeds of title of the Castle, entrusted to the Prior of Christ Church, Canterbury. Sir Hugh took the Prior to court and eventually obtained the documents which prove his right to the Castle. The Mohun coheirs, the Duke of York, the Countess of Salisbury and Lord Strange of Knockin-a formidable trio, still argued the validity of the transaction. Sir Hugh was not easily panicked; he won Parliament onto his side and so arranged arbitration by two peers and all the justices. When this failed, Parliament insisted the claim should be heard in the ordinary courts before an impartial jury. By this time, the Mohun's case was wearing thin and they resorted to arguing legal technicalities. It is nevertheless disappointing to find the the story lacks a climax; the case was adjourned in 1407 after the first hearing and was never recommenced. Henceforth, Sir Hugh's right to Dunster was unchallenged. He worked hard to make his new home habituale; and on his first note was to install windows in the neat hall and his private quarters. In 1420 work began on the gatehouse, a symbol of property of the newowner of the Castle. (Guidebooks of the Castle show the interiors, portraits, furniture, etx., which have been in the family since his time.) He was afterwards ranger of Blackmore forest in Dorsetshire, a privy councilor to Henry V., and on of the commanders under that martial monarch at the reduction of Harfleur in Normandy in 1415, and at the memorable siege of Rouen."

INDEX

[19992] Known as "Ellis," he and his brother Randall were born in their parents' home on Vine St., Orrville, Wayne Co., OH. He was named for David H. Piper, his uncle who was killed in military service in 1862. "Ellis" graduated in 1894 from the University of Nebraska Law School and opened a law practice with Bert Lyons in Wichita, Kansas. He moved his family to an area between Valles and Tampico in Mexico in 1903 in order to acquire agricultural land; the intent was to grow sugar cane from which to brew alcohol. Randall (then in his early 20s) and his father Jonathan joined the venture - only Randall remained. In late 1904 David moved his family to Atlanta, GA where he was employed by L. W. Rogers who owned a grocery store chain. About 1907 they moved to Decatur, GA and lived in a house next to one of the Rogers grocery stores. He moved to historic Fitzgerald, GA where he had a store and where he met Cora; for the history of Fitzgerald, see http://www.fitzgeraldga.org/hist.html. The 1910 census of Fitzgerald lists David E. Peiper [sic] with wife Cora and son Ellis G.and daughter Mary. The 1920 census of Jacksonville, FL lists David E. (age 50) with wife Cora G (age 50) and children Ellis G. (16, b. in KS) and Mary R. (13, b. in GA). The 1930 census of Fort Lauderdale, FL shows David E. Piper (age 56, b. in OH), but does not list anyone else living in his household. Cora apparently returned to Cordelia, GA, as the 1930 census lists her there as head of household, with son Ellis G. (age 26, b. in KS) and daughter Mary R. (age 24, b. in GA). His marriage certificate spells his surname Peiper - the marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. WIlliam Kaufman, Pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Traverse City with F. Gardner and Myrtle Gardner as witnesses.

[30020] "The Selinsgrove Times-Tribune [Selinsgrove, PA], 23 November 1933," p. 1: "George D. Witmer, 49, died a beautiful death last evening, immediately after leading, with his rich baritone vcice, a group of friends in the singing of 'Smiles'. Members of the local Masonic Lodge, Lafayette No. 194, and their wives, numbering more than 200 persons, assembled in the basement of the First Lutheran Church for dinner and a social evening. After Mr. Witmer had led the singing he took his seat at the banquet table beside his wife and leaning over her shoulder, as if to speak to her, expired. He was immediately carried from the banquet hall to the Sunday school room on the floor above, where physicians pronounced him dead. Mr. Witmer had been suffering with indigestion for several days, but was net considered seriously ill. An acute attack of that ailment is attributed as the cause of his death. George D. Witmer was born at Salem, April 4, 1885, the son of the late George Miller Witmer and his widow, Mrs. Sarah Amelia Moyer Witmer, of Salem. After attending the Salem public schools he was graduated from Susquehanna University School of Business in the class of 1906. He was one of Susquehanna's greatest football players. Mr. Witmer was then associated with his father in conducting a store at Salem and the management of lhe George M. Witmer Sons Mill, at Clifford. Mr. Witmer was possessed with a baritone voice, the cultivation of which he fondly hoped for. In 1911 he saw an advertisement in a Philadelphia newspaper for untrained voices to join the great chorus of the Metropolitan Opera Company, in Philadelphia, where special training would be given. Mr. Witmer seized that opportunity, went to Philadelphia and was one of 16 chosen by Oscar Hammerstein from 900 applicants. After a year's study with the Metropolitan Opera Company he returned to Salem, due to the illness of his father, and had charge of the Witmer business activities. During the World War he was appointed by the United States Government as a flour mill inspector, in which capacity he traveled over much of the United States. He held this position until that line of endeavor was abandoned after the Armistice. Four years ago Mr. Witmer was appointed receiver for the Sunbury and Selinsgrove Electric Railway Company, which position he held at the time of his unexpected death. He was a director in the Snyder County Trust Company since organisation of the institution. Mr. Witmer was also a member of the borough council. Mr. Witmer was married November 21, 1912, to Miss Maude Isabelle Runkle, of Middleburg. Day before yesterday they celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Witmer resided at Middleburg after their marriage until 11 years ago, when they removed to Selinsgrove. Brief services will be held at the late residence, 221 Orange street, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, following which the cortege will move to Salem Reformed Church. There in the edifice where the deceased worshiped since a boy, and where his family for generations before him did likewise, services will be conducted by tJie pastor, Rev. Herman G. Snyder, of Middleburg, and Rev. Earl G. Kline, pastor of St. Paul's Reformed. Church, Selinsgrove. Interment will be in the Union cemetery, Selinsgrove, with the last rites of the Masonic Order. George D. Witmer is survived by his widow, one son, George D. Witmer, Jr., a senior in the Selinsgrove High School; one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Witmer, a student of the 6th grade in the local schools; his mother, Mrs. George M. Witmer, of Salem, and the following brothers and sisters: Miss Katherine Witmer, of Salem; Mrs. Arthur C. Harris, of Gordon; Ralph Witmer, of West Walnut street; Calvin Witmer, of Snyder street, Mrs. J. H. Kuster, of North Orange street. George Witmer always smiled and always sang. He will be remembered for both, as well as his many other fine attributes."
