[55674] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 31 January 2024: "Bangor - The world has lost a beautiful soul. Marlene Avis (Aldrich) Stubbs was born August 22, 1935, in Glenwood, Maine, to Rueben Roy and Viola (Carll) Aldrich. When Marlene was four, she lost her mother and so began her journey of living with family and friends from Wytopitlock to Lincoln and finally Silver Ridge where she met the love of her life, Winston Stubbs. They married soon after her Sherman High School graduation and enjoyed 58 years together until his death in 2011. They moved to Orono in 1957 and created a happy life together raising their daughter at Pushaw Lake. This proved to be a wonderful neighborhood where friends would gather for an impromptu party, her famous Saturday night beans with homemade yeast bread and rolls, or to help each other through good times and bad, but she never forgot her Aroostook County roots, of which she was most proud and returned to often. Marley, Sis, Mum or Mimi, as she was affectionately called, loved her family dearly and she and Winston spent many years visiting family camps, snowmobiling in winter, playing cards most any time and hunting in the fall. She even shot a moose once, in spite of herself. Together with family they traveled across the U.S. and Canada, but many days traveling the back roads of Maine in a pickup truck made the most special of memories. Marlene taught and was Director of D'Lor Beauty School, retiring in 1989. She loved her students and they loved her for her caring and understanding ways. She had a talent for drawing out the best in people with her easy smile and sparkling blue eyes. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and immediately put them at ease. After retiring, Marlene turned to volunteering at EMMC in many departments, lastly in Palliative Care fulfilling her passion of comforting others. She loved dancing anywhere the music struck her, being a working member of Zonta, her bus trips and road trips with her sister-in-law (with whom she could always find fun), her Twin City Baptist Church family, Tuesday breakfasts with friends and especially enjoying time with her daughter and the 'Friday Nite Girls' who were very supportive during her decline. They will all miss her and the laughter she created. Her final years were spent at Winterberry Heights Assisted Living due to the onset of Alzheimer's. She and her beloved cat Maxi enjoyed new friends there and the community feeling of the fellow residents and staff. Marlene was predeceased by her parents; husband; sisters, Marguerite (George) Steeves and Dorothy (Vernon) Libby; brothers, Roy Dalton (Virginia) Aldrich and Robert 'Bobby' Aldrich; and baby sister, Marilyn Aldrich. She leaves behind her loving daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Bob Millett; dearest granddaughter, Michele and her husband, Roy Merrill, of NH; great-grandchildren (who lit up her world), Logan and Emily Connors; sister-in-law, Barbara Aldrich; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harry 'Tim' and Charlene Stubbs; and many nieces and nephews, who were all very special to her."
