[20005] Mary applied for a Civil War widow's pension on 9 October 1922. A witness to her marriage is C. W. Turner of whom Ellis Gardner Piper remarks: "I am willing to bet that C. W. Turner was Mary Melissa's daddy because forty days later, on August 12, 1872, little Gertie I. Gardner was born. Better late than never, they say." Cora Gardner called Mary "Mamma," although Mary is reputed to have demeaned her in favor of Mary's own children. Ancestry.com offers: "Turner Name Meaning - English and Scottish: occupational name for a maker of objects of wood, metal, or bone by turning on a lathe, from Anglo-Norman French torner (Old French tornier, Latin tornarius, a derivative of tornus 'lathe'). The surname may also derive from any of various other senses of Middle English turn, for example a turnspit, a translator or interpreter, or a tumbler. English: nickname for a fast runner, from Middle English turnen 'to turn' + 'hare'. English: occupational name for an official in charge of a tournament, Old French tornei (in origin akin to 1)"
