[58432] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 8 January 2025: "Limestone - Neal Harry Leighton Jr., 95, passed peacefully on January 3, 2025, surrounded by his family at home on his farm in Limestone, Maine. Born on December 21, 1929, in Limestone, Neal Jr. was the beloved son of Neal and Carrie Jane Leighton. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jean Arlene; his children, Carla Hudson and spouse, Donald, Della Leighton-Shaw, Chuck Shoaff and spouse, Lisa, Stephen Leighton and partner, Claudette Bell, Jeffrey Leighton and his spouse, Robin, Jim Leighton and his spouse, Debi, and David Leighton and his spouse, Tina; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Neal is reunited with his parents, Neal and Carrie; his son, Neal Harry Leighton III; his brother, James Leighton; and sisters, Alene Thompson and Shirley Orr. He graduated from Limestone High School in 1948, and married Jewel Kelly that fall, raising three children, Carla, Della, and Neal. In 1979, Neal married Jean Churchill, raising four sons, Steven, Jeffrey, Jim, and David. Family was the most important thing in his life. His eight children blessed Neal and Jean with new generations of grandchildren and great-grandchildren - his greatest pride and the focus of his life. He was surrounded, supported, and loved by his large family his entire life. Neal dedicated 45 years to Loring Air Force Base, starting with nearly a decade of seasonal work, including the base's construction, followed by 35 years in supervisory roles across most operational areas. His final position was foreman of the heat and cogeneration plant. Neal retired on September 29, 1994. He served as a Limestone town selectman and spent 38 years on the Limestone Water District board, including 26 as chairman. His legacy includes spearheading nearly $30 million in grants for new groundwater wells, a water treatment plant, a storage tank, major sewer upgrades, replacement of 80% of sewer lines, and solar capabilities to sustain the community's future. Neal was an avid sportsman - spending many years hunting and fishing in the Allagash, then three decades fishing on Eagle Lake, where he and Jean summered for nearly 30 years. Neal and Jean were one of the founding members of Loons Echo at Eagle Lake, where Neal served on the Board of Directors, Grounds Committee, and Boat Committee. Neal was a passionate competitor, racing boats and snowmobiles for many years, and for ten years, hosted racers from across New England and Canada at Leighton's Moto Cross. While he loved boat and motocross racing, he was passionate about snowmobiles and snowmobile racing, winning countless races and championships in the U.S. and Canada. Godspeed to this legendary man who lived large, leaning into life with gusto, enthusiasm, optimism, and spirit."
