"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine],"12 July 2024: "Medway, Maine - Dorretta Ann Carney, 78, passed away surrounded by her loving family at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine, from complications of long term C.O.P.D. on July 8, 2024. Dorretta was born November 8, 1945, in Bangor, Maine, and was the daughter of the late Jasper and Ernestine Donovan.
She spent her childhood growing up on potato farms owned and operated by her parents. First in Frenchville, and then Ashland, both in Aroostook County. After graduating Ashland High School she moved to the Medway, ME, area with her then husband, Leroy Carney, were they raised a family. Dorretta had an incredible work ethic and drive to better herself. Her first big project involved buying an abandoned and run-down campground in Medway in which she renovated and operated for about a decade under the name Katahdin Area Camping. After selling the campground she moved on to buying, fixing, then flipping houses, apartments and even a camp. Perhaps as an attempt to slow down a little bit she moved to a large property in Howland, ME, but the 120 acre spread still provided many things to do and kept her busy. After several health setbacks she moved into Sweet Seniors Residential Home in East Millinocket, where she spent the last three years of her life surrounded by a great group of other residents and a caring staff. When Dorretta wasn't working her fingers to the bone she loved to travel and vacation. Early trips were family vacations to Old Orchard Beach or Hampton Beach on the Maine and New Hampshire coast. She went on to buying timeshares which she used to travel across the country and even around the world. Without a doubt her greatest love was for her three grandsons who all referred to her as 'Meme' and they spent lots of time during the summers and holidays running around the property in Howland having a grand old time. In addition to her parents, Dorretta was predeceased by her three brothers, Jay Donovan, Ronald Donovan, and Fred Donovan; a half brother, Dennis Donovan; half sister, Lula Nygard Jole; brothers-in-law, Wayne Carney, Arnold Nygard, and Billy Hudson; and sisters-in-law, Beverly Corriveau and Betty Donovan. She is survived by several in-laws, including sisters-in-law, Connie Donovan, Margaret Donovan, Marjorie Carney, Judy Hudson, and Sherry Jandreau; brothers-in-law, James Hudson, Wendell Hudson, and Dale Hudson; first cousin, Rowena Robinson; ex-husband, Leroy Carney; son, Troy Carney and his wife, Kendra, of Bristol, CT; son, Christopher Carney of Wolcott, CT; daughter, Luann Brown and her husband, Nelson, of Medway, ME; grandson Joshua Carney of Bristol, CT; grandson, Nathan Carney of Bristol, CT; and grandson, Nicholas Brown of Medway, ME. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her and will miss her dearly."
