"Founders of Early American Families - Revised Edition," Meredith B. Colket, Jr. (Cleveland, OH: 1985), p. 192, lists a George Lewis (Lewes) bapt. at Brenchley, Co. Kent, England 31 Aug 1600; at Plymouth MA in 1633, Scituate in 1635 and Barnstable in 1640 - d. at Barnstable by 3 March 1663/64 - a clothier and freeman. See also http://babbage.clarku.edu/~djoyce/gen/report/rr02/rr02_013.html which states in 2003: "Although Deane [Samuel Deane, "History of Scituate, Massachusetts, from Its First Settlement to 1831"] says George married Sarah Jenkins, sister of Edward Jenkins, Wakefield [Robert S. Wakefield, "George and John Lewis of Brenchley, Kent, England, and Scituate, Massachusetts," The American Genealogist, 68, 1993, 24-28] finds no justification for that statement. George did have a wife Mary who probably was the mother of three of his children." Cf. "The History of the Town of Hingham Massachusetts: The Genealogies", George Lincoln, 1893, (1982 reprint of Volumes 2 & 3). http://www.calaisalumni.org/Maine/1lewes.htm states that George was "killed by the Indians at Blackstone's farm, Barnstable, 3/26/1676, founder of Barnstable 1639, Scituate 1636" and includes this paragraph: "'Gen Reg of First Settlers of NE,' p. 178: LEWIS; GEORGE, Scituate 1636, came from East-Greenwich in Kent, England, and was admitted a member of the church in Plymouth; dismissed 23 Nov 1634 and settled in Scituate, from whence he removed to Barnstable, and was killed by the Indians at Blackstone's farm, 26 March, 1676.
