She was born Emma Frances Carter to Elmer Carter Sr. and Lillian Martin Carter in Hancock, Maine, on March 31, 1924. She served as a U.S. Navy telegrapher during World War II. Emma married Merle M. Dow in 1945 and they spent much of their adult lives in Hancock until retiring to Cocoa Beach, Fla., where Merle died in 2000. Emma was in assisted living for many years, most recently at Canterfield of Ocala, Fla. The family is grateful to the many caregivers at Canterfield and Hospice of Marion County for their kindness and services in her time of need. Emma is survived by daughter Rita Cole and husband Peter; son Paul and wife Beverly; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. There will be no funeral. Her ashes will be buried next to Merles in Hancock."

Henry Shull, of Newport, made the discovery, Mr. Flickinger having been dead several hours. Rita is survived by three sons, James Bladen and fiance, Lori Levasseur, of Eddington, Brian Steele and wife, Carol, of Belfast, Brett Steele and wife, Melissa, of Belfast; a sister, Thelma Fordham and husband, Warren, of South Carolina; grandchildren, Andrew Bladen, Jennifer Sanborn, Amanda Perkins, Brian Steele II, Nicholas Tibbetts, Michael Steele and Brittany Steele; five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and special friends, Gerry Nilsen, Gilbert Bryant, Debbie Bryant and Ashley Bryant. The Odenkirf Family History (unverified) (http://www.odenkirk.com/html/nti07476.htm in 2003) reports: "Degory Priest was one of the victims of religious persecution and fled to Leyden, Holland to be able to practice religion in a less hostile environment. He was married to Sarah, widow of John Vincent and sister of Isaac Allerton. Degory came over on the Mayflower in 1620 but died shortly after arrival in America. His widow married for the third time to Godbert Godbertson and came to America with him and her children by Degory Priest, Mary and Sarah, in the Ann in 1623. Degory had been admitted a citizen of Leyden, 16 November 1615, and was listed as a 'hatter'. The only other English friends of Degory to be awarded with this honor were Bradford and Allerton." It is probable that Degory Priest is the "Digorius Prust" baptized in Hartland, Devonshire, England on 11 August 1582, the son of Peter Prust. (New England Historic and Genealogical Register, 111:320). Degory Priest stated in a record in April 1619 in Leyden that he was 40 years old. See Robert S. He graduated from Brewer High School class of 1962. Ray began his career as a motorcycle mechanic at Holland Brothers, Brewer then went to work for Darlings Recreational Division and finally Friend and Friend in Ellsworth, retiring from there. He was an avid RC Plane enthusiast. His flying motto was 'let's go bore some holes in the sky.' He created his own flying field named Perry Field, where he taught and invited friends to enjoy flying. Ray was a member of East Orrington Congregational Church where he especially enjoyed the Men's Group. He was predeceased by his son, Dan; and sister, Paulette. Surviving are his wife, Judy of Orrington; two sons, Jason 'Jake' and his wife, Jennifer Perry, and David Perry, all of Orrington; three much loved grandchildren, Adam, Kaden and Emmaleigh; and nieces and nephews."
