[42483] On 15 May 1567, Mary Queen of Scots made an unpopular third marriage to James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell. The marriage took place according to Protestant rites in the Great Hall at Holyrood, eight days after Bothwell's divorce from Jean Gordon, daughter of the 4th Earl of Huntly. Mary and Bothwell's marriage proved disastrous - within hours of the union, placards appeared on the streets of Edinburgh with images of Mary as a mermaid (which was the sign for a prostitute) and Bothwell was forced to flee Scotland exactly a month later, never to see Mary again. James Hepburn died a prisoner in Dragsholm Castle in Denmark. Bothwell, the third husband of Mary Queen of Scots had been prisoner at the castle since 1567, when he was caught trying to escape Scotland to raise an army following opposition to his marriage. Although initially treated as a foreign dignitary, the conditions in which Bothwell were kept became poorer and at the notorious Dragsholm Castle, he was kept in solitary confinement until his death. Shamokin News-Dispatch, 30 March 1931, pp. 1-2: William Tasker, Sr., former resident and father of Pearce H. Tasker, Pennsylvania railroad clerk, died at his home at Pottsgrove Saturday aftemoon at 3:40. Death was due to complication of diseases, incident to old age. He was 81 years old. The deceased was a lifelong resident of this city up until shortly fol lowing his marriage to Mrs. Emma Rowe in 1915. Three years later he removed with his bride to engage in farming near Pottsgrove. For the past few years Mr. and Mrs. Tasker lived in retirement at Pottsgrove. Mr. Tasker came to Shamokin from his birthplace at Pembrokshire. South Wales, England, in 1880. He was born at the latter place February 5 1850. For many years the deceased followed mining as an occupation. He identified himself in membership with the Primitive Methodist church and was one of that congregation's oldest members. Fraternally he was a member of Mt. Tabor Lodge, No. 125, 1. O. O. F, and Encampment No. 60, I. O. O. F. The first wife of the deceased died twenty-seven years ago. Surviving from that union are three sons, John William, Jr., and Pearce H. Tasker, all of this city. One sister, Mrs. Thomas Parcel, of South Wales, also survives.
[55611] Joseph is son of James Wardwell (1819-1898) & Zebiah Phillips (1820-1875).
