Find A Grave memorial 102111690 offers:
Contributor JWR provided this interesting insight into Margaret (Reade) Lake:
From the "Historical Footnotes, Bulletin of the Stonington Historical Society", 1984:
"Margaret Lake had first arrived in Boston in the ship Abigail, Oct. 6 1635, after ten weeks of ocean tossing, with her daughters, Hannah and Martha. On the same trip was her sister Elizabeth, the bride of John Winthrop, the younger, who was returning from a mission to Britain for the encouragement of immigration into Massachusetts."
......
"Elizabeth's sister, Margaret Read Lake, apparently seized an opportunity to leave what may have been an untenable marital situation to emigrate to Massachusetts to be with a congenial sister and a well-placed brother-in-law, and to take along her daughters, who would be needing husbands.
Three Gallup genealogies refer to Mrs. Lake as widowed, and indeed she so described herself in her will thirty-seven years later. However, it seems that her husband, John Lake stayed in England. The couple apparently, had not been in touch for years.
Usually a seventeenth-century husband would not hesitate to leave his wife behind in England, but for a seventeenth-century Englishwoman to leave her husband there, must have taken strong resolution."
