[5029] Robert, 5th Lord of Annandale, was Regent of Scotland. He forfeited the Crown of Scotland by refusing to do homage to King Edward I of England. He is called "The Competitor." In 1291 he unsuccessfully competed with John Baliol for the crown of Scotland. Cf. John Gough Nichols, ed. "The Herald and Genealogist," 8 (1874): 325-348 at 336. http://www.geocities.com/janet_ariciu/OldScottishfamilies.html offers: "Robert Bruce The Competitor 1201-1295, the descendant of a Norman on whom the lordship of Annandale had been conferred by David I, was the son of Isabella, 2nd daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon. 1255 Robert was one of the guardians of young Alexander III but his career was for many years mainly in England. He supported Henry III against Simon de Montfort and after the latters overthrow at Evesham (1265) he became governor of Carlisle, sheriff of Cumberland and in 1268, Chief Justice of the Court of Kings Bench. His first marriage was to Isobel, daughter of Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Glouscester and Hereford and 2nd to Christina, daughter of Sir William de Ireby. In 1270, he went on a crusade with Edmund, the youngest son of Henry III. In 1284, he acknowledged Margaret, 'the Maid of Norway' as heiress to the Scottish throne, but on Alexander IIIs death in 1286 he rose in arms to claim the throne in virtue of an alleged declaration by Alexander II (then childless) in 1238 that he, as a male, should be preferred to the daughter of his mothers elder sister. In 1290 on the death of 'the Maid of Norway', he renewed his claim and in 1291, along with his son, swore fealty to Edward I, to whose judgment the competition for the throne was remitted. After Edward appointed Balliol as King. Bruce resigned his rights to his son Robert, who had become Earl of Carrick by his marriage c1272 to Marjory, daughter and heiress of Neil, Earl of Carrick. Carrick who lived until 1304, was the father of King Robert I, to whom he had resigned his earldom in 1292 and of Edward, King of Ireland as well as of three other sons, Thomas, Alexander and Nigel all of whom were put to death by the English." Charel Fonteyn, the immigrant, is on the passenger list of "The Guilded Beaver". The LDS Church's unverified IGI records show a Charel Fonteyn, b. 1636 in France, d. 1 Aug 1687 in Bushwick, NJ, son of Philippe DeFeonteijn DeWikkat of Paris, France, and wife Mary Flamegh (m. 5 July 1615 in France).

He was asked for proof of his marriage to Catherine just prior to departing for America, and in reply recieved an affadavit: 'Sir, Mr. Delafontaine retired about seven years ago which is why I, who follow him answer, am given to understand that you want a proof of marriage. I have researched in the register of the late parish priest Mr. Le. Monn---- The marriages of which are not written past the point of year 1645. This is why [??] marriage in 1647. ----marriage in this -----[St.?] Catharine -----able----to give an attestation of -----this----you celebrated in marriage with Catherine Bally in the aforementioned church in the year 1647. ---I have always been ----- I am your very humble servant...... at [Honnechy]-----' on 25 March 1658 in Netherlands.
"He immigrated to New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York, arriving 17 May 1658; Arrived in America on 'De Vergulde Bever' [The Gilded Beaver]. 'Other French colonists, whose places of birth are not recorded, emigrated about this time to New Amsterdam, by way of Holland. We have the names of Charles Fonteyn, .... Though the fact is not expressly stated, it may be presumed that the greater number of these immigrants, like those previously named, originated in the provinces of Picardy, Normandy, and Bretagne.' He was was one of 14 frenchmen who petitioned for permission to settle on Long Island in Boswyck (Bushwick) on 16 February 1660/61. He was was amongst the first settlers after March 1661 in Bushwick, Kings County, New York. He was was on the list of people (nr. 15) who asked for pasture and outlets to the river between Hendrick Willemsz and Jan Corn on 14 March 1661/62 in Bushwick, Long Island, New York. He was magistrate in 1663 in Bushwick, Kings County, New York.6 He was is listed in Regulations for Officers & Soldiers (Charel Fontein, nr. 16, Soldier) on 14 June 1663 in Bushwick, Long Island, New York. He was is on the list of persons required to pay for the Honorable Ministers (Charel Fontein, nr. 13, paying 4 guilders) on 13 January 1666 in Bushwick, Long Island, New York. He was appeared in in "Court Minutes of New Amsterdam" regarding money owed to him by Knoet Mourits estate is fl. 268:10 (The money was awarded.) in 1674 in New Amsterdam, Kings County, New York.
"He left a will on 1 August 1687 in Bushwick, Long Island, New York; He made an oral will at his bedside with his wife present. 'A joint will between Charles Ffontain of Bushwick and his wife Katrina Baely.'"
