Compton's Encyclopedia (via America Online, 1995):
Edward VII (born 1841, ruled 1901-10) was nearly 60 years old when he took
the throne from his mother, Queen Victoria. He had married Princess Alexandra
of Denmark in 1863. Before taking the throne he was the most active member of
the royal family, since Queen Victoria remained in seclusion after his
father's death in 1861.
After the death of Albert, the Prince Consort, Victoria excluded Edward
from any role in the conduct of government. Until he was 50 he was forbidden
to read the reports of Cabinet meetings. During the decades before he became
king, he traveled widely and cemented contacts with the other royal houses of
Europe--most of whom were relatives of him or his wife. He was also a
familiar figure in the worlds of racing, yachting, and grouse shooting.
The man who was crowned on Aug. 9, 1902, was an individual of unusual
social gifts and worldly experience, and as king his course was marked by
tact and judgment. He enjoyed great popularity both at home and abroad. He
set out first to restore to the Crown some of the traditional splendor that
had lapsed during the years of his mother's seclusion. In 1902 he set out to
revisit European capitals in order to strengthen the British position on the
Continent. Already aware of the war clouds that were looming over Europe, he
strove to avoid armed conflict. (By the time World War I erupted in 1914,
Edward was dead.) He played an influential part in bringing Great Britain,
France, and Russia together in 1907 into the Triple Entente. Unfortunately,
his nephew Kaiser Wilhelm II regarded Edward's diplomatic triumphs as an
attempt to encircle Germany with a ring of enemies.
At home Edward strongly supported the military reforms of the secretary of
state for war, Richard Burdon Haldane. Finding himself in declining health
and concerned about the likelihood of war, he considered abdicating before he
became ill and died on May 6, 1910.

From Brian Thompsett: "Christened Albert Edward; called, 'The Peacemaker'
Reign: 1901-1910; It is not always realized that Queen Victoria was the last
sovereign of the House of Hanover and King Edward VII was the first of the
House of Wettin or the House of Saxony. Edward VII, in an outburst of
anti-German feeling engendered by the First World War, changed the name of
his 'House and Family' from Wettin to Windsor in 1917. Edward gave his name
to the Edwardian period."

[37470] This person is from the unverified Meckel Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2014. In 2014 http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Winch-97 offers: "Samuel was born about late 1640's. Unknown at this time who his parents were, or where he was born. Some genealogy sites say that his father's name was John Winch from England. Some sites say that his mother was Elizabeth Dillingham, Others say Elizabeth Boothby. I tend to believe that the original spelling for his last name was Winche. His father's name may have been John because he named his firstborn son John, who died young, and later named another son John. There must have been a good reason why he wanted the name in the family line. In 'The New England Historical and Genealogical Register ' 1884 Vol. #38, pg 203 - The will of a Nathaniel Hawthorne (died1652) mentions his nephew John Winch and his wife Ann (possibly Samuel's father and mother). And John Winche his 'loving Kinsman'. A haberdasher from London to be executor of his will (possibly Samuel's Grandfather). Note Nathaniel had a sister named Elizabeth. One clue that I am hoping helps identify where he was born, and who his parents were was a Mary Winch (Winche). She came to America aboard the Francis of Ipswich in April 1634, landing at Plymouth.
