[59624] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 3 April 2024: "Penobscot, Maine - Basil R. Clement died Easter morning at the assisted living home where he had spent the last three years. He lived a long life with only having sickness in the last few years. Basil was born in West Penobscot and lived on his own land until his eighties. He was truly a local boy, only leaving the area only when the North Penobscot Assisted Living Home closed. He lived with his mother, Carrie Clement, until her death in 1997. Basil was single but was always connected with his sister's family. Christmases were especially important for his extended family to be with him. His nieces spent her first nine years and then all her summers with her grandmother and uncles as a non-traditional family for the times. It was so much fun to ride with him over to the little filling station and get the treat of a soda pop and bag of potato chips! He was a hard-working man. Basil began his working days as a sixth grader who had to keep the fire burning in his one room schoolhouse. He raked blueberries and did odd jobs as a teen. In his twenties, he worked at Jim Asten's Sawmill. Most of his life, he was a truck driver for Allen Bowden. It was just amazing how he could turn a dump truck with such precision. When that job dried up, he did odd jobs, still connected to the Bowden's work. In his sixties and seventies, he had his own business doing yard work. Basil should be remembered as a good and kind man. He never spoke ill of anyone, but sometimes shook his head several times when something riled him. Basil had so much fun talking with his fellow workers at Allen's Garage, how he would grin and sometimes let a small laugh out with them after a hard day's work! Also, whenever someone was sick or had died, he and his mother would spend most of the day, asking for donations from the neighbors for people to give blood, if needed, or funeral flowers. He was most proud of being a lifelong Grange member since the age of 14. When he was able to join. Just on February 2 of this year, he was presented with his 75-year Grange certificate and 80-year Grange certificate. It was such a happy event for him! Basil was predeceased by his father and mother, Ralph H. and Carrie F. Clement; his sister and her husband, Edmund H. and Muriel F. Marenius; and his nephew and his wife, Dennis E. and Anita Marenius. He is survived by his niece and her husband and family, David L. and Belinda M. Sharpe; and nephew and his wife, David R. and Christy Marenius and their family."
