She was born in Rehoboth, Mass., on June 19, 1921, the daughter of Edith Olson Leach and Harry Leach. She resided in Warwick, R.I., and later moved to Downeast Maine. She was a graduate of Aldrich High School. She was predeceased by four brothers, John, David, Donald and Harry Jr., and two sisters, Hope and Betty. Her sister Elsa Chilinski survives her. Married to Floyd Rollins Ober for 62 years, they had four children: Conrad Ober, Ann Maske, Becky Birely and Clyde Ober. She left behind many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who all knew her as Nana. Ruth attended Lakewood Baptist Church, Ashville Community Church and Prospect Harbor United Methodist Church. She had a passion for mission work and made and donated rolled bandages, hats, prayer shawls and dozens of baby sweater sets. She received a pin in recognition of her generosity in sending care packages to Afghanistan. She was actively involved in church, volunteered for Girl Scouts, Hospice and Faith in Action and was named Volunteer of the Year by Faith in Action in 2007. She loved everyone, and was known for her beaming smile and warm hugs. Ruth was an outdoor girl. She loved the water with swimming, boating and fishing and was a member of the Old Sow Whirlpool Survivors Club. She had a green thumb for growing vegetables and flowers especially African violets. When spring and summer rolled around you would find her gathering dandelions, picking berries and going on picnics. Ruth enjoyed sharing stories of Jesus, knitting, baking pies and playing cards."

[61528] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 20 February 2026: "Beals Island, Maine - Joyce L. Alley, 87, of Beals Island, Maine, smiled as she left her tired, physical body, and those whom she loved deeply and adored, to continue her spiritual journey on February 16, 2026. She was born August 27, 1938, in Beals to the late Ewart G. and Mineola (Beal) Lenfestey. Joyce grew up on 'the farm,' the baby of 7 siblings, Lillian, Lavonne, Chester, Verlan, Almena, Adele, and Wilfred. One of her chores involved washing milk bottles, then getting the cow's milk strained and bottled in preparation for supplying the town with milk. 'Biggest part of the time there was a horseshoe game going on,' but she could never play. Hopscotch, jumping rope, and Alley Alley Over were some of her favorite games played solely. Her rendition of 'You Are My Sunshine' on stage at roughly 3 years old won her the cash prize in the talent show. She enjoyed sharing her singing talent whether it was in the church choir, community choir, with Jamboree friends on the weekends, or visiting the ill. Her heart overflowed with joy when her children joined in song. A self-taught ability to play piano, guitar, and accordion added to Joyce's musical talents. In 1957, she graduated from Beals High School as valedictorian, which she never boasted of, with her close-knit classmates/friends. They remained close throughout the years and celebrated their 50 year class reunion together with spouses in 2007. A new love story began the day Ralph knocked on Mrs. Alley's classroom door asking to speak to Joyce. He didn't really propose, but started talking about a ring. They married in December 1957 beginning their voyage as captain and his first mate. They shared a 'true love always' celebrating 61 years of ball and chain, and would have done it all over again. He tagged her as his 'Better Half' on the bow and stern of his new boat. They worked tirelessly side by side in the boat providing for their family. They not only taught by word, but also led by example. Remember the sabbath, when in doubt - pray, blessed are the peacemakers, work hard, save for a rainy day, respect your elders, and treat others as you want to be treated, just to name a few. Keeping the laundry clean and smelling fresh for a large active family, fulfilling snack requests her children nominated her for at school or other functions, and warm meals served daily without any complaint from her. Sunday afternoon rides, picnics in The Backfield, and weekends on Head Harbor Island were not the only special events she mastered. Birthdays were always celebrated with a special birthday cake fully decorated and candle lit. Holiday meal spreads were fit for royalty. It was open door and everyone was welcome after the boat races on the 4th of July displaying her family favorite fried chicken, potato salad, homemade cream horns, whoopie pies, chocolate cherry-nut cookies, homemade rootbeer, plus lots more. No one went away hungry. Pies galore after the Thanksgiving feast. She could make a meal out of scraps and whip up a pan of beautiful biscuits with ease. Pleasing others was important to her. At the top on favorites list would be her most loved grandchildren. She was a playmate to her GRANDS. A fun, smart, kind, and caring Nanna, who loved unconditionally, always ready for a game of cards, marbles, or some random, child invented game. She offered calm, wise advice, but was assertive when she needed to be. Their biggest fan no matter the sport, event, decision, etc. wearing the necklace full of charms representing each child kept them close to her heart. They could count on her for her quiet support, special toast with homemade jam for breakfast/anytime, or a kool-aid mix for the impromptu roadside stand. Having a large family didn't stop Nanna and Gramp from finding time together. A motorcycle ride on warm summer days; mooring the boat off Head Harbor to soak up the sun, curb hunger, and for a break in the work day; lunches eaten in the truck at the Backfield admiring the beauty of God's creation; spending a few winters at their place in Florida wanting family and friends to visit; and they often met friends at McDonald's almost filling the seating area. A cheeseburger and strawberry shake was her happy meal. They might not have had it all, but they were rich. They might not have had it all together, but they were blessed. Joyce held various baby/child sitting jobs earning one dollar per day. She worked as cashier for Obeline in the JP Alley & Son store until the sardine factory whistle blew, then sailed across Moosabec Reach in Uriah's boat to catch the factory bus for work at RB & CG Stevens sardine factory. A natural eye for hair styling even coaxed her father into the armchair for pin curls. Many doors received her Avon calling knock and they welcomed in her friendly smile. Picking crabmeat and making wreaths were seasonal but staying busy was her nature. Hometown proud, she served her beloved Beals Island as teller of elections, which allowed her the opportunity to converse with friends/neighbors not in her daily circle. She organized parades, memorial services, and fought hard for the beautiful gymnasium (in place of the sport utility room). She was willing to lend a helping hand where needed. Dementia is a thief as it robs individuals of how-tos and precious moments with loved ones. Joyce's love for family remained, often expressed across her face as she recalled family members by name or 'I know you're my family.' Her faith also remained strong as evident in her prayer requests and singing of hymns from the heart leading others to appreciate her love of God. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt THANK YOU to the amazing team at Atlantic Shores for their love, hugs, kisses, and best of care given to our dear Mama/Nanna. Joyce was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Ralph E. Alley; grandchildren, Dale Fenton and Kelsey Cole; great-grandchildren, Baby Beal and Lilly Cole; parents; grandparents; and 7 siblings. She is survived by her children, Raynard Alley, Lenell (Dale) Fenton, Bethanie (Daniel) Beal, Wilma (Robert) Jones, and Sheldon (Michele) Alley; grandchildren, Dylan Alley, Kimberly (Alex) Burke, Marcus (Kelsey) Fenton, Suzanne (Scottie) Reynolds, Abraham (Whitney) Beal, Andrew (Dedra) Beal, Lindsey (Jody) Zeisloft, Wesley Cole, Tristan Alley (Seth), and Tyler Alley (Hailey); great-grandchildren, Lydia and Ryelan Alley, Kypp and Katie Burke, Carter and Ava Fenton, Winter and Harvey Beal, Ellouise, Emmalyn, and Eden Beal, Michaela Zeisloft, and Lincoln Embree; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, too many to name individually but loved."
