[33714] "The Perry County Times [New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania], 19 July 1917," p. 1: Ickesburg, July 16 - William Johnson Rice, son of William and Elizabeth (Loy) Rice, died at his home in lckesburg Saturday at 5:40 a. m. of arterio sclerosis, after an illness of several months, aged 69 years, 4 months aud 7 days. He was born in Tyrone township March 7, 1848. He was married to Caroline Hartman October 13, 1870 by Rev. Samuel E. Herring. He is survived by his wife, five sons, Charles, a P. R. R. employee at Harrisburg; Harry H., a contractor at Lemoyne; Silas A., a merchant of Ickesburg; Edward E. , a farmer of Madison township, and Miles L., a P. R. R. employe, and one daughter, Mary E., wife of Edward Weibley of Saville. He joined the Lutheran church at Loysville in early youth and lived a consistent follower of the faith until his death, serving his church in the capacity of elder, deacon, Sunday school superintendent and on various committees - always faithful and willing to do whatever his hand found to do, and do it with his might in the service of the Lord. He acquired a good education and began teaching at the age of 18 and taught in the schools of this county for 24 years. He was considered one of the strongest and best teachers in the county, having been awarded a diploma at the Perry County Teachers' Institute at its annual session of 1880 for the "Best School Room Program" exhibited at the Institute exhibition. Signed by J. R. Flickinger, Chas. H. Smiley and John Edgar committee, and B. B. Fahnstock, county superintendent. He always took an active interest In civic affairs, as well. He served as school director of Saville township for several years, tax collector and one term as stewart at the Perry county almshouse at Loysville. While serving as stewart he received a fall from a mow in the barn, alighting on his head, receiving injuries which indirectly caused his death. About 1882 he moved to Saville towusuip and engaged in farming, residing in that township until his death. He took a live interest in agriculture and agricultural affairs. He was employed at the State Agricultural Department at Harrisburg as a correspondent and wrote many articles for publication in various agricultural papers. In politics he was a staunch Republican and a valued member in the councils of his party. He was a strong, energetic man, full of interest and enthusiasm In all affairs pertaining to the general welfare of the community. He was always active in all movements making for progress and the betterment of spiritual or civil life, fearless of criticism,, having the courage of his convictions, steadfast and loyal in his friendship. By bis death the family loses a kind and loving husband and father, the church a faithful and conscientious worker, and the community is useful and efficient citizen. We extend our sincere sympathy to the bereaved family. Funeral services will be held at his late residence tomorrow at 10 a. m. Interment will be in the Buffalo cemetery. Rev. J. C. Relghard, pastor of the Blaln Lutheran charge officiating."
