[704] Richard settled at Scituate, Mass. by or about 1640; in 1643 settler in York Co., Maine where he was a Provincial Councilor (1651-2), Selectman, Trial Justice or Commissioner, Court Appraiser, etc. (-ref.: "Genealogy & History of the Chute Family in America" [at Madison, Wisc. Historical Library]). See "The Bank(e)s Family of Maine," C. E. Banks, NEHGR 1890, pp. 258-263. Richard m. (1) Elizabeth Curtis and they had Elizabeth. The LDS Church's Ancestral File (not verified) reports: "Richard Banks (AFN: 9J6T-6H), b. 1626 in Alkham ?, co. Kent, England, died 25 Jan 1691/1692 ?, in York, ME. Parents not known. Marriage(s): Elizabeth Alcock (AFN: 9J6T-7N), ca. 1656 "of York, ME"; Elizabeth Curtis (AFN: HQ9F-XK), m. ca. 1644, "of Ash Juxte, Sandwich, Co. Kent, England"; Joan Harrison (AFN: XMG0-5K), m. after 25 Oct 1631 in England." Cf. "Genealogy and History of the Chute Family in America". http://www.one-barton-family.us/genealogy/viva/d2711.html (not verified) states Richard "was a victim of the York massacre." "History of York, Maine," Banks, Charles Edward (Baltimore: Regional Publishing Co., 1967) Vol. I, p. 155, identifies him through circumstantial evidence as the Richard Banks, tailor, who lived in the parish of Alkham, co. Kent, about two miles from his future brother-in-law, Thomas Curtis (who emigrated to Scituate, MA) - this Richard Banks was licensed to marry 15 Oct 1631 at St. Andrews Church, Canterbury to Joan Harrison of Elham, to whom three children were born (the last bapt. 5 Sept 1641 after which the family disappears from co. Kent records) - (p. 156:) "Richard Banks appears in Scituate, Mass., where he took the oath of fidelity . . . probably about 1642, and there is nothing to show that he came with a family, and it is assumed that this wife and the two young children died before his emigration. . . . he married for a second wife Elizabeth Curtis, sister of Thomas Curtis...about 1644. . . . [After she disappears from the records, perhaps dying, he] married for his third wife Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabet Alcock . . . . (p. 157:) He was killed in the Indian Massacre January 25, 1692, and his widow and two sons made an agreement April 22, 1696 as to the division of the estate." Banks, op. cit., p. 202a, shows a map of York Village with the house lots of the original settlers, indicating Richard Banks' lot along "Scituate Row." See Banks, op. cit., Vol. 3 for family genealogy. Cf. "Historic Homes and Places and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Middlesex County, Massachusetts (Volume IV)," p. 1628. His mother raised him and his sister after his father died when he was a teenager. He has always had a special love for Stonington and any chance he got, Wayne would travel there to see family and friends and smell the ocean air. He graduated from Stonington High School, Class of 1951 and went to a trades school in Augusta before he was married. Wayne served in the United States Army during the Korean War, as a ham radio operator. He was married to his loving wife, Letha, on November 8, 1952. Wayne was employed at Footman's Dairy as a milkman for 30 years. Following his retirement, he continued to work for Modern Pest Control and Darlings Ford as the Parts Dept delivery driver for many years. Wayne made many friends and acquaintances during his employments. He was a kind, compassionate caring man. Wayne had many a story to tell and he touched the lives of everyone he met no matter where he was. He was without a doubt a gentleman of all gentlemen. He was a member of the Ralph J. Pollard Lodge #217, AF & AM of Orrington, and a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District INR Flotilla 12, Bangor. Maine. Positions he held while being a member of the Flotilla 12, were Commander, Vice Commander, Coxswain, Vessel Safety Inspector, and Qualified Examiner. Wayne retired after 30 years with the Flotilla. Boating and sailing were such great passions of his even though he didn't own a boat. When asked to go out on patrol or even just for a ride, he was ready, willing and eager to go. Wayne was so happy on the water. Our Dad was a role model for all other Dads. He enjoyed going camping to Bar Harbor Campground and others with family and friends. His family was his life. Wayne also enjoyed playing dartball at Second Congregational Church and the East Orrington Congregational Church while he was able to. In addition to his parents, Wayne was predeceased by his wife, Letha in 2016, and two daughters, Sally and Sherri. He is survived by his daughter, Tamra Jamieson, and husband, Jerry, of Dedham; three sons, Kerry Spofford, and wife, Pamela, of Holden, Barry Spofford, and wife, Cathi, of Monroe, and Donald Spofford and wife, Faye, of Brewer; sister, Glenna Aldrich; grandchildren, Elissa McCall, Kimberly Lorenz, Renee Giguere, Julie Pace, Courtney Carter, Joshua Torrey, Matthew Spofford, and Meghan Spofford; great grandchildren, William, Molly, Kelsey, Caden, Waylon, Danielle, Clara, Kaylob, Prestyn, and Matty; several nieces and nephews; former son-in-law, Allen Doll. While residing at the Leach Home, he had a metal sign in the shape of an old milk truck attached to the front of his walker. He would proudly walk around the facility with his walker. Even then, he was still 'the milkman'. He was always teasing someone there - each time with a twinkle in his eyes. The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at the Ellen M. Leach Memorial Home and Northern Light Health EMMC staff and Northern Light Home Care & Hospice for their exceptional care of our Dad. Kerry, Barry, and Don would like to especially thank our dear sister, Tammy, for taking such wonderful care of our Dad and our Mom's wants and needs for so many years. Dad and Tammy had a one in a million loving father/daughter relationship."
