[31422] See http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Ier_de_Bar.
[327] Robert came to America on "Recovery of London," leaving England 31 March 1633, Gabriel Cornish, master. Robert resided at Dorchester, MA in 1634, then at Salem soon after becoming a freeman in 1640; he owned land at Gloucester in 1642; was a member of the Salem Church in the 1640s; was a selectman at Gloucester in 1648 and later; was member of a committee to erect a new "meeting house" in Gloucester in 1664. {-"Elwelliana - Memorabilia of Levi Henry Elwell, 1854-1916," by Elizabeth Starr Versailles, Williamsburg, Mass.: 1974; "The Elwell Family in America," revised by Charles Henry Pope, 1906} The Elwell surname is English, and mostly appears in the county of Dorset. Robert m. (2) Alice Leach (she died 10 April 1691). Except for Isaac, the children given here are not verified and are from A. J. Oxton, Box 144, Centre Conway, NH, 11/95 via Internet. In 2003 see http://www.wainwrightfamily.org/elwellfhr.htm for an excellent discussion of his family. See "The Great Migration, Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume II, C-F," Robert Charles Anderson, George F. Sanborn, Jr., and Melinde Lutz Sanborn (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2001) pp. 426-429. Cf. Family Tree Maker's CD 194, "Massachusetts and Maine Families," I:507, and "Pioneers of Massachusetts - 1620-1650," Charles Henry Pope (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2013), p. 155. ["Elwelliana Supplement," Richard C. Elwell (Niskayuna, NY: the author, 2005) updates the 1974 genealogy of the family by Elizabeth Versailles.] See notes for son Samuel for Robert's will. Ancestry.com suggests the meaning of the surname: "English: habitational name, most probably from a place in Dorset, named from Old English h?l omen + well(a) spring, stream; the reference is presumably to pagan river worship. Two minor places with this name in Devon are probably named as elder-tree spring, from Old English ellern elder tree + well(a). The surname is now found chiefly in the West Midlands. Compare Halliwell."
