[59791] Robert's obituary: "Abbot & W. Enfield - Robert Burton Kallgren, 83, died October 4, 2014, at the Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln. He was born March 4, 1931, at the Guilford Hospital in Guilford, the son of Byron and Doris (Chamberlain) Kallgren. The hospital was later owned by his mother and the family lived there for several years before selling to Dr. George Howard around 1945. Bob was a member of the class of 1949, which was the last class to graduate from Guilford High School. He was hired at the Guilford Post Office right out of high school and worked there for 5 years, with time out for the Korean War. He married his high school sweetheart, Marion Richards in 1951. They had 3 children, Stuart in 1952, Kathleen in 1954, and later Bruce in 1962. Bob left the post office in 1955 to work for New England Telephone in Dover-Foxcroft. He transferred to Presque Isle in 1958 and later to Millinocket in 1960. In 1972 he was promoted to management and moved to Bangor. In 1977 he asked for and was transferred to Dover-Foxcroft as Supervisor of Installation and Repair for Piscataquis County. He retired from Verizon in 1985 after 30 years. He built his home in Abbot on land where his wife was born, and they lived there for 34 years. After retirement Bob had to be busy, so he took a job with Hardwood Products Co. in Guilford, doing maintenance and telephone work at the plant and at owners homes for 18 years. He was a selectman for the town of Abbot for 25 years. In his first year as selectman, they built a new town hall, of which he was very proud. He said that it was not easy, but it was fun. Bob loved the outdoors, which included hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and camping. He especially enjoyed the family camp on Whetstone Pond. He loved to fly and had his pilot's license. He did a lot of flying in his early years. He belonged to the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, the American Legion Post #119 for 61 years, the Telephone Pioneers for 58 years, Big Pine Riders Snowmobile Club of Abbot and the Whetstone Pond Association. He was always trimming and grooming the trails for the Snowmobile club. In 2012 the club gave him a life time membership. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marion (Richards) Kallgren of W. Enfield; 3 children, Stuart Kallgren and his fiancé, Susan Dunham of West Enfield, Kathleen Pulkkinen, and her husband, Lance of Abbot, and Bruce Kallgren and his wife, Sally of Guilford; a brother, Kenneth Kallgren and his wife, Lois of Michigan; 2 grandchildren, Kalli Pulkkinen and her partner, Kendall Jipson of Carmel, and Kyle Pulkkinen and his partner, Lauren Allard and their son, Jackson all of Bangor; a sister in law, Sylvia Kallgren of FL; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Blaine. A graveside service will be held at the Blanchard Cemetery in Abbot, followed by a celebration of his life at the home he built on 109 Pond Road in Abbot."
