[58571] John's obituary: "Machias - John Robert Atwood (94) passed away at Down East Community Hospital, Machias, May 23, 2024 surrounded by his family. John was born in Bangor October 11, 1929, the son of Gerald H. and Margaret (Lamond) Atwood. His early years were spent in Perry and Eastport, before moving to Orono where he attended grade and high school. Following graduation in 1949 from Kents Hill in Readfield, John joined the United States Marine Corp attaining the rank of sergeant. During one deployment he served with a Marine Jet Aircraft unit aboard the Aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. Following his discharge in 1952, John and his wife, Valdine, moved around living in Connecticut and Catskill, New York. In 1959, the love of his home state drew him back to Maine and to Eastport, where they lived for several years. John found employment during the construction of the Cutler Naval Radio Station. When the base officially opened, he was among the first to be employed, working his way up to become supervisor of antenna maintenance. Following his retirement in August 1987, John sold and installed TV antennas and worked around Machias as a handyman. An avid duck hunter, he spent as much time as he could at his beloved camp, at East Bay in Perry. The camp he built was on the last piece of property inherited from his great grandfather Daniel Lamond. John will be remembered by many of the men in Machias as their Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 69 years, serving as District Deputy in the 1960s, and traveled the state on a degree team. He was a member of the American Legion Post #9 for 39 years and a proud member of the Maine Mayflower Society for 47 years. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Valdine (Chalmers) Atwood; daughters, Kathleen Maker and husband, Burton of Cutler, Pauline Laurie and husband, James P of Meshoppen, PA.; sons, Robert J. and wife, Deborah, and Stewart L., both of Machias; grandchildren, Joshua R. and wife, Christie, of Simpsonville, SC, Meredith Atwood of Waterville, Lindsay Laurie Wolf and husband, Joshua of Ambler, PA, James P. Laurie of Meshoppen, and Byron Atwood of Bangor; great grandchildren, Peyton Atwood, and Jacob, and Piper Wolf."

[27300] http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cousin/html/p373.htm offers this line (not verified) and reports: "Albrecht I "der Bär", Markgraf von Brandenburg inherited Saxon estates between the Harz Mountains and the middle reaches of the Elbe River from his father, Otto the Rich in 1123. He served the Holy Roman emperor Lothair II in 1132 at Italy. He received, in return for his services, the North Mark, east of the junction of the Elbe and Havel rivers in 1134. He received, after his mother's death, the central German possessions of the Billung dynasty, but he was unsuccessful in his attempts to win the Saxon duchy in 1142. He was the first margrave of Brandenburg and founder of the Ascanian dynasties. He obtained, by an arrangement made with Pribislav, prince of the Havelland, that district after the prince's death in 1150. He died on 18 November 1170 at Kephissos."
