Theodore I "scarcely looked the part of a great leader. In body he was very small, moderately dark, with a long beard which was divided at the ends. His eyes differed one from the other, probably indicating that one of them did not focus properly. Looks notwithstanding, Theodore was a brave soldier. As the husband of Anna Angelina, Alexius III's daughter, his claim to the throne was better than that of anyone else available after the fall of Constantinople. He reigned 1206-1222.
