[58061] "Quad City Times", 4 September 2010: "Rock Island - George Norman Foster, 71, of Rock Island, died peacefully on September 2, 2010, at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Officiating will be the Rev. Michael Schaab. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island, after brief graveside services. Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting with arrangements. Memorials may be made to: St. Pius Evening Meal, Holden Cancer Research Center through the University of Iowa Foundation, or a charity of one's choice. George was born on November 4, 1938, in Calais, Maine, the son of George W. and Evelyn Sprague Foster. He married Mary C. Steckel on August 21, 1965, in Moline. George graduated from Woodland High School, in Baileyville, Maine, in 1957. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, stationed aboard the USS Vesole with the 6th Fleet. He deployed to the Mediterranean and other locations in Europe serving as a radar operator. After completing his four year enlistment, he moved to the Quad Cities to attend Palmer School of Chiropractic. He later received his Associate of Arts Degree from Blackhawk College. His employment included: Ralston Purina, Blackhawk Foundry, Farmall Foundry, and French & Hecht. In his later working years George was successful in starting his own lawn, landscaping and snow removal business. He retired in November 2006. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church until its closing. He then became an active member of St. Pius Church, participating in the funeral choir. George was a great fan of the Boston Red Sox. He loved Fenway Park and was very happy when the Red Sox finally beat the Yankees and Cardinals to win The World Series in 2004, after 86 years. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed traveling the world, and participated in yoga and water aerobics classes. He loved spending time with his family and dog, Chase. He has always loved his home state of Maine and yearly returned to visit family and friends. During a recent trip, he successfully climbed Mount Katahdin, the highest mountain in the state at 5,268 feet. Throughout George's illness he found strength in his faith. He was an inspiration to all and will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Mary; brother, Terry Foster and wife Sandra of Bucksport, Maine; sister, Marie Neale and husband Kenneth of Topsham, Maine; sister, Barbara McLaughlin and husband Thomas of Baileyville, Maine; sister-in-law, Anne Steckel of Moline; eight nieces and nephews, John Steckel, of Rock Island, Anne V. Steckel, of Washington, D.C., Krista Ottman and husband Daniel, of Morrill, Maine, Kurt Foster and wife Donna of Fairfield, Maine, Scott Neale and wife Erin of Kennebunk, Maine, Ryan Neale of Topsham, Maine, Sarah McLaughlin of Glenburn, Maine, Brian McLaughlin of Baileyville, Maine; six great nieces and nephews all of Maine: Meaghan and Brett Foster, Taylor and Kaylen Ottman, and Cameron and Ellen Neale; and special family friend Shirley Thomas of Moline. [60497] Barbara's obituary: "Prospect - Barbara A. Tilley, 87, passed away at her home with her loving family by her side on Wednesday January 29, 2025. She was born on May 28, 1937, the daughter of Hayward and Ruth (Cyr) Haley. She attended schools in Bangor, and Searsport until settling into a life in Prospect. She married Richard Herbest and had 4 children. After her divorce she proudly purchased a house in Prospect for herself and her children that became her lifelong residence. Barbara later in life met Paul Tilley and they were married in October 1964 and had a daughter together. They were married for 54 years until his passing in 2018. After retiring Barbara and Paul each purchased antique cars and enjoyed traveling to car shows and being members of Coastal Antique Auto Club together. Barbara was a hard-working woman whether it was waitressing or owning and operating The Prospect Corner Store with her husband for 7 years. She also worked for the shoe factory until she went to work at St. Regis Papermill in Bucksport in 1977 where she became the first woman foremen in Production. She also served as secretary and Vice President of local Union 261.She retired from the papermill in 1999. In Barbaras years of living in Prospect she served on many committees. She was a Town Selectman, a School Board Representative, member of the Historical Society, the Cemetery Association, and Prospect Community Center. She served many roles with the Prospect Community Center. She served as secretary, treasurer, and President throughout the years, handled the heating oil fund, setting up and cooking for many town suppers and hunters breakfasts, organized the kids Christmas parties, and parades. If there was an event in Prospect you know that you would see Barbara right there helping and supporting in any way. She enjoyed every moment of it. Barbara took a lot of pride in Prospect. She would refer to it as 'her town' and she was very proud of her town. Barbara for many years reported the town news in both the Republican Journal and the Bucksport Enterprise. She once wrote 'Lets get Prospect on the map again!' When she gave up her column at 87, the Republican Journal honored her with an article and called her The Heart of Prospect. Barbara is survived by her daughter Rosemarie Webster and her significant other Rich Whitlock, daughter Lisa Sutherland and husband Dwayne. 9 Grandchildren, 16 Great-Grandchildren, and 3 Great Great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents Barbara was predeceased by her husband Paul Tilley and her children Richard Herbest Jr, Thomas H. Herbest, Debbie Herbest Valenoti, her brother and sister in law Harold Haley and wife Susan Haley."
