Levi WORKMAN
[43917]
11 JUL 1844 - 21 FEB 1907
Family 1
: Elizabeth Matter KEISER
Son of Joseph Workman & Catherine Heberling; Husband of Elizabeth Matter Keiser m. 1866
Father of
1. Irene (Workman) Lubold b. 1866
2. Ellen C. Workman b. 1868
3. William H. Workman b. 1870
4. Dora (Workman) Lee b. 1873
5. Clyde L. Workman b. 1876
6. Levi C. Workman b. 1879
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 8, 1862, joining his brother Joseph as a private with Co. G, 96th Pennsylvania Infantry. Levi was discharged by surgeon's certificate March 8, 1863, but Joseph died at the battle of Spotsylvania, as did two other men named Workman serving in the same company and regiment (Joshua and Frank). Levi also enlisted in Lykens, Dauphin County, June 15, 1863, mustered into state service at Harrisburg June 19 as a private with Co. D, 26th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company July 30, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 6, 1864, as a private with Co. K, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa), and honorably discharged by general order May 29, 1865.
(Note: You may at times find Levi's and Joseph's military records reflecting service with both the 96th and 95th Pennsylvania Regiments. In September 1864, the few remaining men in the 96th consolidated into the 95th, and their records went with them. Ergo, they appear in both regiments, although both Levi and Joseph were gone before that happened.)
In 1890, he lived in Rock, Mercer County, West Virginia. On September 19, 1905, he entered the soldiers' home at Johnson City, Tennessee, whose documentation lists Tracy, Grundy County, Tennessee, as Levi's home, living there with his son William, a doctor. Levi transferred to the Hampton, Virginia facility on October 21, 1906, but there is no discharge date on their records. Here the soldiers' home records are at variance with yours." They claim that he died in Tracy, Tennessee, on February 21, 1907, and the location at least makes sense.
