[10621] During the War for Independence Daniel (who refused to take the Oath of Allegiance) was imprisoned by the British, his cattle and crops confiscated and his house torn down. He escaped with his family back to York, enlisted, and served in the ill-fated Penobscot Expedition. He was held as a prisoner at Fort George in 1779. After the war he returned to Penobscot and rebuilt their home. Rilla Leach Moore writes in "Mill Creek, Penobscot, Maine" (1967), p. 5, "A fire destroyed an early Baptist Church of 1823 on the land of Daniel Perkins. It was thought to be of an incendiary origin." Cf. "Maine Families in 1790, Volume 2", Ruth Gray, ed. (Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1990) and typescript pamphlet "The Perkins Family in Castine, Brooksville and Penobscot, ME," Grace Lymburner (1948) in the Boston (MA) Public Library.
