[48544] "The Ellsworth American, 23 March 2021:" "Penobscot - Mary Ellen 'Cupe' (Bakeman) Gross died on March 19, 2021, at Northern Light Blue Hill Hospital. She was born on July 22, 1952, in Castine to Oliver 'Gook' and Dorothy 'Dot' Bakeman. She grew up in Cape Rosier. Cupe married the love of her life, Cordell, on March 15, 1969. They settled in Penobscot, where they raised three daughters. Through the years, Cupe worked as a CNA at Penobscot Nursing Home and at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She worked for the town of Penobscot for 18 years as tax collector, treasurer, clerk and administrative assistant until she was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. It was a job she loved and was sad to leave. Cupe loved to crochet, quilt and knit and was an avid reader. She enjoyed going on adventures with her sister 'Crisco.' She was predeceased by her parents, her husbands parents, her beloved niece Kristen and brother-in-law Sheldon. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 52 years, Cordell Gross, daughters Gail and husband, Peter Grant, Molly Varnum and partner Scott, Annie and husband, Keith Tilsley, grandchildren Ethan Grant and fiancée Katrinia, Dori and husband, Christian Goddard, LeeAnn Varnum, Adam, Ella and Lacey Tilsley, siblings Frank Bakeman, Robert Bakeman and wife, Helen, Elaine Murak, Elizabeth and husband, Robert Herrick, and David Bakeman, special niece Sara and many other nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Alta Gross and brothers-in-law David and Mark Gross."

[13521] "The Jeffersonian-Democrat [Brookville, Pennsylvania], 29 November 1945," pp. 1-2: "Harry Stanton Geist, of Pansy, died Tuesday, November 27, 1945, around 10:00 a. m., in the summer kitchen on his farm. He ended his life by shooting himself in the stomach with a shotgun. He was seventy-two years, nine months and fourteen days old at the time of his death. Despondent over ill health he had left the house about 8:00 a. m. Tuesday morning, warning his daughter to stay away from the summer kitchen. She kept a constant watch on the building and at 10:30 became alarmed, and investigated. Lifelong resident of Jefferson county he was born at Worthville February 13, 1873, a son of Eli and Kathryn (Reed) Geist. About fifty years ago he was united in marriage to Carrie Brosius, and to this union ten children were born, two of whom preceded their father in death. Mrs. Geist preceded her husband in death several years ago. Harry Geist lived his early life at the hotel in Worthville, and at one time he and three other men loaded 5,000 acres of logs for Kip Kaiser and Clark lumber mill. The lumber tracts were located between Coolspring and Anita. On moving to Beaver township he bought the farm formerly owned by Robert Neel and he had resided there ever since. Surviving are the following children: Edith Irwin, of Brookville; Ethel Butler, of Pansy; Grace Yount, and Vera Reitz, of Mayport R. D.; Clyde, of Buffalo, N. Y.; William, of Worthville; Homer, of Rossiter, and Everett, of Curllsville. One sister, Ellen Geist, of Worthville, also survives."

[41638] An unverified file in 2016 in Ancestry.com offers: "Benjamin Joy was born on January 15, 1740, in Biddeford, Maine. . . . He died on June 13, 1830, in Ellsworth, Maine, at the impressive age of 90. . . . Elizabeth Hovey was born in 1730 in York, Maine. . . . She died as a young mother in 1758 in Biddeford, Maine, at the age of 28." Note that this file indicates he was ten years old when he had his son! More research is needed on this line. Ancestry.com offers: "Joy Name Meaning - English: nickname for a person of a cheerful disposition, from Middle English, Old French joie, joye. In some cases it may derive from a personal name (normally borne by women) of this origin, which was in sporadic use during the Middle Ages." The unverified file LDK9-S6T in familysearch.org offers: "Benjamin Joy (1741-1830) was one of the first permanent white settlers of Ellsworth, Maine. He came from New Hampshire with the first party of white settlers who came to Ellsworth. They came in a vessel, sailed into Union River Bay, up Union River, both banks of which were then covered with an old growth of pine, spruce and maple, and landed near where the foundry and machine shop of B.B. Walker and Co now stands, and cooked the first meal that ever was eaten by permanent inhabitants of Ellsworth, Maine. Benjamin was also a ship builder and business man. In fact, the first ship built in Ellsowrth in 1788 was named 'Susan and Abigail' for the eldest daughters of Benjamin Joy and Jonathan Millikien. (taken from the 'Odyssey In A Downeast Outhouse' written by Bruce Carter and published in 1998 by Downeast Graphics, Ellsworth, Maine."
