[58685] Everett's obituary: "Stonington - Everett Allison Billings, 74, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, at a Deer Isle health care facility. He was born Nov. 16, 1928, in Stonington, the son of John Everett and Addie Myrtle (Morey) Billings. He attended the local schools, graduating from Stonington High School in 1946. His first job after graduation was working in the South Portland railroad yards. Everett returned to Stonington to go lobstering with his father and in 1947 met his future wife, best friend and caregiver, Betty Joan Gross. They married in 1950, and recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Everett became well known for his ability to design, build, and repair the huge fishing nets used on the fleet of trawlers fishing on the Grand Banks and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. After 22 years as Mate on the 140' trawlers, he came ashore to build and hang gillnets for the inshore fleet. He also knit thousands of heads for lobster traps until his most recent illness. Everett was a proud member of the Joshua Davis Lodge, IOOF, for over 57 years. He was predeceased by his parents; half sisters, Kathleen Barter and Esther Burrill; a beloved brother, Donald; and a three-year-old daughter, Judy Lorraine Billings. Everett is survived by his wife, Betty Billings of Stonington; two daughters, Kathleen Eaton and her husband, Thomas, of Cape Neddick, and Beth Bigler and her husband, Paul, of Columbus, Ohio; four sons, Dana Billings and his wife, Barbara, Brian Billings and his wife, Annette, all of Deer Isle, Jerald Billings and his wife, Prudence, of Brewer, and Brad Billings and his wife, Suzanne, of Deer Isle; 11 grandchildren, Benjamin, Marissa, Ryan, Josh, Amanda, Joseph, Connor, Cameron, Dominick, Desmond, and Delaney; a brother, Norman Billings of Bath; three sisters, Elaine Capen of Mariaville, Lillian Anderson of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Mary Weber of College Point, N.Y.; close friends, Robin, Stacey, Sonya and David; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins."

The Stillwells were descended from one of the most influential and important families, which first settled in New Amsterdam (New York) in the late 1630's while it was still controlled by the Dutch. The family originated in Surrey England. The progenitor of the family in America was Lt. Nicholas Stillwell, 1603-1671. To escape religious persecutions in England he went to Holland. There he offered his services as a soldier to Elizabeth the queen of Bohemia in support of Protestantism. After suffering defeat at Prague, he was one of the queen's escort during her flight to Breslau. It is rumored that he married one of her maids of honor, Abigail Hopton. Extensive research had yet to prove that that marriage happened. After the disbandment of the queen's army he and other family members came to New Amsterdam. He emigrated with his family to New Amsterdam, apparently in the 1640's. The Stillwells eventually settled at Graves End on Long Island with the Lady Moody colonists. Lt. Nicholas Stillwell commanded forces against the Indians in Virginia and later aided Governor Claybourne in MD. He owned one of the original 20 acre farms at Graves End. and eventually resided on 200 acres near Graves End. He was a lieutenant and commander in charge of the expedition against the Indians in the Esopus war. After completing that mission successfully he returned to New Amsterdam and served as a friend and confident of Gov. Peter Stuyvesant, the last of the Dutch governors before the English takeover of New Amsterdam.
His second son was Captain Nicholas Stillwell 1636-1714/15. He served as a justice and a constable at Graves End for a number of years. He also served as captain of the Graves End militia. From 1691-1698 he was a member of the colonial assembly from King's County NY. In 1693 he commanded the King's County contingent of men with the Fletcher expedition to Canada against the French and the Indians. He was a man who received many honors during his lifetime. Nicholas Stillwell came from England, first to Virginia, possibly by 1634/35, and was a tobacco viewer there in 1639, then settled in New Amsterdam about 1645/46. On 9 Sep 1648 purchased property at Gravesend, Long Island from Richard Dunn. In January 1649 Nicholas Stillwell was choosen as one of the magistrates for Gravesend, and was reappointed annually through 1653. In 1653 he removed to New Amersfoort (Flatlands), Long Island. In 1654 he was made President of the Court Martial for the trying of freebooters and pirates in Brooklyn. He was magistrate at Amersfoort in 1654 and 1655, and was later in that year, again, a resident of Gravesend and was choosen as magistrate there. In 1664 he removed to the south eastern shore of Staten Island.

She worked for nine years at Concordia Lutheran Church and spent the last 20 years working for Macy's as a sales associate. Susan will also be remembered for her dedicated support of the Akron Aeros. She attended the very first game at Canal Park, and she and her sister Wendy rarely missed games from that point on, including being there for the League Championship just last month. They were indeed the Aeros # 1 fans. Preceded in death just three months ago by her father, Richard; she is survived by her mother, Joan; brothers, Gary (Susan) and John (Lori); sisters, Linda (Jim) Triola and Wendy Weiss; and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends." Susan was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Akron. She died of ovarian cancer. She was buried one day before her mother's 80th birthday.
