[59693] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 18 February 2014: "Hampden - Richard M. Newcomb, age 70, passed away at a health care facility in Orono on February 14, 2014. Richard was born January 18, 1944 in Bangor, Maine the son of Kenneth T. Newcomb and Ruth E. Severance of Hampden. Richard was dedicated to education and may be best known for his knowledge and love of the history of Hampden, where he lived his entire life. He received his Bachelors degree from the University of Maine and his Masters degree from Husson College. He started his teaching career at Caravel Middle School and then moved on to Beal College as Vice President for 15 years. Later he worked for Eastern Maine Community College as Financial Aid Director and was employed at Bangor High School in the Adult Education Program tutoring students in algebra for many years. At the end of his working career he worked for Department of Human Services in accounting. Richard was Past President of the Y.M.C.A. Management Club, the Hampden Historical Society, the Hannibal Hamlin Law office and the Husson Alumni Association. He was also a member of Rising Virtue Masonic Lodge #10 of Bangor, Anah Temple Second Section, and a long time member of the Eastern Star Grange #1 of Hampden. Richard moved and restored the Hannibal Hamlin Law Office located at the Historical Society. He wrote and published two books, the first being the complete list of Alumni of Hampden Academy for the years 1803 thru 2003 and the second a book on Riverside Park. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Sharon (Bartlett) Newcomb; his daughter Suzanne Cole and her husband Christopher Cole of Levant; a grandson Ethan Cole; one sister Patricia Treworgy and her husband William of Milbridge; and 2 brothers, Roger Newcomb and wife Linda of Swanville, and Larry Newcomb and wife Frances of Fortworth, TX; In-laws, Donald Bartlett of Hampden, Stephen Bartlett and wife Laurie of Exeter, Kathryn Bouchard and husband Guy of Orrington, Stuart Bartlett and wife Eileen of Stockton Springs and David Bartlett of Montgomery, AL, and many nieces and nephews, as well as close friends, Richard and Anne-Marie Madore, Mike and Andrea Kervin, Amos Kimball, Nancy Doyon, Brian Chandler, Travis and Christy McClure and Mark Johnson."
