[38377] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 3 August 1940, p. 21: "Castine - Castine lost a valued citizen in the death of Charles F. Wardwell at his home Thursday evening after an illness of several months. Mr. Wardwell was born in Penobscot June 6, 1873 and had lived in Castine 33 years. He was a seafaring man all his life, going on his first voyage to the Grand Banks when he was only 11. Though decidedly a husky salt water man, he was kind and gentle in his family. For the past 17 years he had been in the employ of Mrs. J. H. Steane of West Hartord, Conn., as a captain. Quoting from Henry Buxton's column in THE NEWS a few years ago, 'Here, indeed, is a Mainer who puts on no frills, makes no idle boasts, and takes a quiet joy in being himself and being square with his neighbors.' Mr. Wardwell leaves his widow, Mrs. Arrianna Hutchins Wardwell, to whom he had been married for 48 years. There were seven children, five of whom survive their father, Neil of Penobscot, Malcolm, Paul, Mrs. Kathleen Bartlett, and Wallace of Castine. He also leaves four sisters and six brothers, Mrs. Laura Dunbar of Penobscot, Ray Wardwell, Perry Wardwell, Frank Wardwell, Mrs. James Hatch, Ralph Wardwell, Gustine Wardwell and Harry Wardwell, all of Castine, Mrs. Mary Bowden of Stockton Springs, and Mrs. Arthur Preble of South Weymouth. There are seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren." http://www.genealogy.com/users/u/n/g/Neil-Ungerleider-MA offers: "In Penobscot at 1900 census. Living with wife's parents in 1910. In Castine in 1920 census. On North Castine Road in Castine at 1930 Census. World War I Draft Registration Card says he was of medium height and stout build with light blue eyes and dark brown hair. Occupation: Seaman in 1900, Fisherman in 1906, 1918 & 1920."
