"Capt. John Phinney(4) was the eldest son of Deacon John Phinney of Mass., and Sarah P. (Lombard) PHINNEY, and born at Barnstable, MA.
He was the founder of Gorham, ME and known as "Capt. John". At this time Maine was part of Mass. and the soldiers of the Indian wars felt that they should lay claim to the territory.
In 1727, after many delays, Massachusetts granted to the officers and soldiers, to each of one hundred acres.
His eldest son was later the distinguished COL Edmund PHINNEY, of Revolutionary War fame.
Capt. John married Sept. 25, 1718, Martha, daughter of John and Patience Coleman of Barnstable. About 1732, he removed with his family from Barnstable, MA to Falmouth, ME and settled in Gorham in 1736.
At beginning of French and Indian War, Capt. Phinney's and eight other families moved into the fort. Here those brave settlers, together with a handful of soldiers furnished by Mass. defended the fort for fourteen years against repeated attacks of the Indians.
Capt. Phinney was a brave, energetic, sagacious man, who "looked after the interests of the little colony that grew up around him, with the affection and discretion of a father. He died Dec. 29, 1780, aged 87 yrs. His widow died same age, Dec. 16, 1784, and both were bur. in Old Cem. in Gorham village. They had ten children: Elizabeth, b. 1721, m. Eliphlet Watson; 2) Edward, b. 1723; 3) stephen, b. 1725; 4)Martha, 1727; 5) Patience, 1730, m. Thom. Watson; 6)John, Jr., b. 1732; 7) Sarah, 1734, m. Sam Leavett; 8) Mary Gorham, 13 Aug. 1736, m. Jas. Irish. She was first white child born in Gorham; 9) Coleman, 1738, d. young; and 10) James, b. 1741.
A monument was erected in the middle of Gorham to his honor.

[2603] Wsevolod I reigned 1078-93 and Grand Prince of Kievan Rus. http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/RUSSIA,%20Rurik.htm offers in 2007: "Vsevolod Iaroslavich, son of Iaroslav I 'Mudriy/the Wise' Grand Prince of Kiev & his second wife Ingigerd Olafsdottir of Sweden (1030-13 Apr 1093, bur Kiev, Church of St Sophia). The Primary Chronicle records the birth of Vsevolod 'a fourth son' to Vladimir in 1030. Snorre names 'Valdemar, Vissivald and Holte the Bold' as the children of 'King Jarisleif' & his wife. In accordance with the terms of his father's testament, he succeeded in 1054 as Prince of Pereyaslavl, the territory including Rostov, the whole Volga, Oka and Klazma river basin and the region of Bielooziero. He was defeated [1062] by the Kuman [Cumans], in their first attack against Rus. He was forced out of Pereyaslavl and retreated to Kiev. He was appointed to succeed his brother Sviatoslav as Prince of Chernigov 1073. He succeeded his brother in 1076 as Vsevolod I Grand Prince of Kiev, but was deposed in 1077 by his older brother Iziaslav. His nephew Oleg Sviatoslavich claimed Chernigov after the death of his father Sviatoslav, but was expelled by Vsevolod in Apr 1078. Oleg returned with support from the Kuman [Cumans] to take Chernigov by force, defeating Vsevolod on the river Sozh, east of Pereyaslavl, 25 Aug 1078. Prince Vsevolod thereupon sought support from his brother Iziaslav, and they defeated Oleg 3 Oct 1078 at Nezhatin Meadow near Chernigov, where Prince Iziaslav was killed. Vsevolod was restored once more as Grand Prince of Kiev in 1078 after Prince Iziaslav's death. The Primary Chronicle records the death 13 Apr 1093 of Vsevolod son of Yaroslav and his place of burial. m firstly (1046) Maria [Irina] of Byzantium , daughter of Konstantinos IX Monomachos Emperor of Byzantium & his second wife --- Sklerina (-1067). The Primary Chronicle refers to the wife of Vsevolod as 'the Greek princess' but does not name her or give her origin. m secondly --- Kuman princess, daughter of --- Khan of the Kumans (-1111). She adopted the name Anna after her marriage."
[39870] The unverified Gilmore Family Tree in Ancestry.com in 2015 offers: "When Susanna Tarleton was born in 1663 in New Kent, Virginia, her father, Stephen, was 26. She married Charles Fleming in 1680 in her hometown. They had 17 children . . . . She died on October 7, 1717, in New Kent, Virginia, at the age of 54." Ancestry.com reports that the surname is "habitational name from Tarleton in Lancashire, near Croston, named with the Old Norse personal name þóraldr (composed of the elements þórr, name of the Norse god of thunder (see Thor) + valdr rule) + Old English tun enclosure, settlement. habitational name from Tarlton in Gloucestershire, recorded in Domesday Book as Torentune and in 1204 as Torleton, probably from Old English thorn thorn tree + leah (forest) clearing + tun enclosure, settlement."
