[60104] "The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine]," 29 June 2023: "Brewer, Maine - Richard M. Southard, 89, husband of Judith (McQuarrie) Southard, died peacefully, on June 1, 2023, in Brewer, Maine. Born at home, on the Station Rd., in Bradford, Maine, to Stanley and Lula (Chadbourne) Southard, their son Richard would travel far...But his heart - and his accent - would forever remain in Bradford. He attended Grammar Schools in Bath, and Bradford, from 1949 - 1953, and graduated from Higgins Classical Institute in 1957. He attended Husson College from 1957 to 1962. He and his wife, Judith met at Freshmen Orientation, got married in 1960, and had their son, Michael, in 1962. Always a multi-tasker, Richard received his degree in Business Administration that same year. His education would continue with additional courses completed at Eastern New Mexico University, and University of Maryland. He was a member of Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity. On May 13, 1953, he joined the Air Force. After Basic Training at Sampson AFB, in NY, he was assigned to Walker AFB, in Roswell, NM, for a year. In 1954 he was sent to RAF Station Fairford, England, where he spent the next 3 years riding his motorcycle across the English countryside, serving his Country, and being way cooler than his Sons will ever be. Following his discharge from the AF, he returned to Maine, and joined the Air National Guard, in Bangor, where he served for 26 years in the Operations Section, retiring in 1983, as a Master Sergeant. Richard worked for Kemper Insurance for 30 years, as a Senior Resident, All-Lines, Claims Adjuster, traveling from Portland to Allagash, ME., weekly. He was a 30 year member, and one time President, of the Northern Maine Adjusters Association. He was also a 20 year member of the Penobscot Valley Ski Club, a long-time member of the Hampden Indoor Tennis Club, and an active member of the Bangor Lions Club. A sportsman at heart, Richard loved to be outdoors, and enjoyed anything athletic. He was on the Baseball, Basketball, and Track Teams in High School, and played Baseball for the Fairford Rebels Baseball Team in England, for 3 years. He and Judith were Senior Ski Patrols at Hermon, Squaw, and Sugarloaf Mountains, over a 20 year period. He was a lifetime tennis player and member of the 'Baxter Group' at Indoor Tennis, and, in 1979, Dick and his son, Mark, won the State of Maine, Father-Son, Equitable Tennis Tournament, and represented Maine in the National Championships. Dick and Judy made their home in Brewer, Maine, where they raised their 2 sons, Michael and Mark. After he retired in 1992, Dick and Judy enjoyed traveling. Over 20+ years they took many journeys to San Diego, and Los Angeles, CA, to visit their son, Michael, and embarked on Ski Trips to Utah, California, Switzerland, Quebec, and throughout Maine. They relaxed, closer to home, at their log home on Little Pushaw Pond, in Hudson, Maine. Besides Sports, Dick had many hobbies. He enjoyed carpentry, landscaping, gardening, and doing genealogical research on the histories of the Southard, Chadbourne, and McQuarrie families. He was a meticulous keeper of records, and had the foresight to provide the outline for this obituary. (Thanks, Dad! From Mike) He is survived by Judith, his loving wife of 63 years; and his two sons, Michael of Brewer, and Mark and his wife, Tammy, of Eddington. He doted upon his granddaughter, Megan Christine Southard and her partner, Shawn Harlow, of Naples, Maine; and two beloved great-grandsons: Zachary and Jackson. He is survived by several cousins: Bourke Trask of Holden, Alvin Trask of Brewer, Robert Smith of LaGrange, Doug Smith of East Corinth, and Leslie Smith of Bradford. He is also survived by former brother and sister-in-law, James and Linda Madore, of Madawaska; and sister-in-law, Rose McQuarrie of Frenchville, Maine; and his many nieces and nephews: Edith McQuarrie (Deceased), Michelle McQuarrie Cross, Andrew McQuarrie III, Shawn Michaud, Peter Michaud, Mark Andrew McQuarrie (Deceased), Danielle McQuarrie, Andrea McQuarrie Hebert, and their families. He treasured his friends, and his life was enriched by long-term friendships with many people, among them Rodney Spearin, Ken Libby, John Ingalls, and George Williams. Richard was predeceased by his aunts, Evelyn Trask, and Ruth Smith; and his uncle Merle Chadbourne; as well as his brother-in-law, David McQuarrie; his sister-in-law, Mary (McQuarrie, Michaud) Madore; and brother-in-law, Andrew 'Skip' McQuarrie Jr."
