{An Arthur B. Connor [sic] of Castine was a Lt. in the United States Navy, commanding the U.S.S. Iris during the Spanish-American War. - Wheeler, George A., "History of Castine..." [1922 edition], p. 395.} Wheeler (p. 397) also states that one of this name from Castine was a Captain serving as "Marine Director of the Army at Newport News, which was one of two Ports of Embarkation for two million soldiers. He was twice offered a commission as Major in the army, but refused...." during the first World War.} He is buried in lot 374 in the Castine Town Cemetery. Note: the hand-written record in the family Bible lists Arthur's family: Marguerite Conner (28 Aug 1894) and Jacobson Burdette Conner (21 Jan 1896).
"The Bangor Daily News [Bangor, Maine], 30 Jun 1924," p. 13: "Capt. Arthur B. Conner, President of the Shipmasters' Club of New York, died at his home at 778 Park Place, Brooklyn on Tuesday, May 6, after a brief illness from acute indigestion. Captain Conner was born in Castine, Maine on May 8, 1859 of good old New England seafaring stock, his father and grandfather having been shipmasters, and went to sea at an early age. He became a master at twenty-three and commanded vessels trading to all parts of the world. He followed the sea for upwards of twenty-five years, retiring to become a marine surveyor at the Port of New York in which business he was engaged at the time of his death. He was at the Maritime Exchange on Saturday, May 3, and appeared in his usual good health. On the following day Sunday at about 11 p. m. he was taken suddenly ill with acute indigestion from which he had previously suffered attacks, and passed away at about 5 o'clock the following Tuesday morning. During the time Captain Conner had been engaged as a marine surveyor he had been almost a dally visitor at the Maritime Exchange and thereby greatly extended his circle of friends and acquaintances. To have known him and to have had the beneficent influence of an almost dally association with him for many years was indeed an honor and a privilege which was greatly appreciated and enjoyed by all of his associates The geniality which was so characteristic of him and which made personal contact with him such a pleasure, his desire to be of service to his fellow-men, his great interest in the youth of our land, and his efforts to lead them along the right pathway and an inherent love of God and country were outstanding features of his attractive personality. Always firm for the right he was unalterable in purpose when convinced in his mind of the justice of a cause and he never hesitated to voice his opinions freely in advocacy of such a cause or in defense of the individual whenever he deemed such a course justified by his conclusions, which were arrived at only after the most careful consideration. Captain Conner's patriotism was evidenced by his service in two wars, the Spanish-Amerlcan War, in which he served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy and the World War, when he was marine director for the United States Army at Newport News, Va. He was a member of Joppa Lodge, F. and A. M., a Knight Templar and a Noble of the Mystic Shrine, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, former member of the Board of Governors of the New York State Nautical School, representing the Marine Society, and a member in an honorary capacity of the Maritime Exchange. Upon his retirement from the Board of Governors of the Nautical School, resolutions were adopted by the Board, expressing appreciation of the services rendered by him to the school and recording appreciation and admiration of his personal character. At his death resolutions were adopted in which the following tribute was paid to the memory of Captain Conner: "To know Captain Conner was not only to respect and admire but to love him. Our Association with him enabled us to know of the sincere and fatherly interest which he took in the cadets of the schoolship. His kind and loving nature was never more clearly shown than his regret, when as a Governor of the School, he had to approve punishment for some infraction of the regulations. In extreme cases, when the discharge of cadet was deemed necessary, Captain Conner often sent for such cadet to come and see him and such interview resulted not only in the cadet recognizing both the justice and necessity of the action taken but in establishing a firm and lasting friendship and love for Captain Conner. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 7, at the Lefferts Place Chapel, 86 Lefferts Place, Brooklyn, which were largely attended by delegations from the Marine Society, the Board of Governors of the New York State Nautical School, and the Maritime Exchange, President Dowd appointing the following committee to represent the organization: William H. Anderson, Frederck Dolander, John Dowd, Reginald Fay, Clarence P. Howland, Edward P. Liesgang, John F. Manning, Captain A. M. Miles, Captain K. O. Peterson, Charles H. Potter, Michael J. Reynolds, Henry A, Zinner. There was also present a special detail of cadets from the Nautical School. The body was taken to his old home in Castine, Maine for interment, and Masonic services were held there by Hancock Lodge No. 4. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anna M. Conner, and one son, Arthur Bradley Conner. - (Maritime Exchange Bulletin)."
